Cylinder Piston Specifications

07/16/2011 12:29 PM

Please can anybody help me out with this!

A load of 200 kg is to be pushed horizontally to ground for a distance of nearly 4 inchs at a speed of approximately 10mm/sec with the help of a hydraulic setup. The movement of the load is guided with the help of linier bushes and the force acts against the piston uniderectionally throughout the operation along the line of its motion . My question now is

1. Will a cylinder rated 12 bars safely serve the purpose. if not how many bars should be the rating. What other factors should be considered if any?

2.Can a cylinder manufactured for pneumatic operation be used in a hydraulic installation. If no, can it be used by incorporating some modifications.

This sounds like homework.

So, I'll just give you the answers.

1. Yes.

2. Yes.

Now, there are many reasons why the answer to # 1. could be no, also, but I doubt you're interested.

There are many reasons why the answer to #2. should be no, but, technically it is yes.

I'd hit the books if I were you.

Yeah, so how does that help?

It doesn't.

No one who has a personal, or even work related, problem would frame the problem like a test question.

Some items to consider:
Coefficient of friction between the bushing and guide rod materials.
Acceleration and deceleration of the load.
Cross-sectional area of the cylinder doing the pushing.
This can be done with pressures that differ from 12 bar by orders of magnitude.

With 12 bar (rated) pressure, you can move 200 kg or even 2000 kg. It all depends on the cross section area of the plunger...

While designing such a system you should start by calculating the force required to push the load then considering your pressure hydraulic or otherwise size the cylinder required (P=F/A). A pneumatic cylinder will work in hydraulic installation but design working pressure should not be exceeded(for obvious reasons) and the seals (piston and shaft seals mainly) may need more frequent replacement as they might not have been ideal for hydraulics.
