Data Logger Software

07/26/2011 4:34 PM

I could use some suggestions for good (free) software for my department's data logger.

We have an OM SQ2040 but I have been unable to get the software from the previous users and am in a bind (and don't want to pay for another license of the software).

Someone suggested looking for freeware written by universities that will work with any logger...any ideas?

The Omega software is less than $300, how much time can you waste before your department would have been better off just buying it?

I abhor pirating software but was hoping to find some freeware that would work . The project is with college and the logger is theirs. Problem is I cant find the person who has the software. The school doesn't want to buy it again so I am stuck till they find it or I find an alternative. Drew K

Drew K, I feel your pain. I've been there.

However, I agree with Ace. I don't like it when somebody pirates the little bit of intellectual property that I own, and I would knuckle under and pay for the license were I in your shoes. I wouldn't really like it, but I would do it. Then there is nothing to worry about, you will get support, etc. And, it is the right thing to do. So, GA to Ace.

Is there a way to short the guy who sold you the data logger, or is he paid off?

If the data logger was originally sold (new I mean) with one copy of the single license software, it is part of the deal and you should be given it as well. You can talk to a lawyer, get the license and get the seller to pay for the lawyer as well.....but give him say 7 days warning first! In writing, using registered mail.

If it's ALWAYS sold separately, then you were "Hoist by your own Petard", eg. its your own fault for not making an explicit, detailed contract. (You did have a written contract, didn't you?)

If you are talking about the software mentioned on the same page as the data logger on the link you kindly supplied, which was described in this manner:-

Comprehensive Software Configuration

The OM-SQ-SOFT software (supplied with the OM-SQ2040 series data loggers) allows logger configuration, data download and data export while giving the user full control over the OM-SQ2040. The optional OM-SQ-SOFT-PLUS software gives the user access to many advanced data analysis and data archiving/transfer features......

Then the seller has not a leg to stand on, the software is part and parcel of the machine and is sold as such by the original manufacturer/supplier. He MUST supply you with the software & license at NO EXTRA COST.

Be a man and get it from him in a proper legal manner at his cost not yours.

Drew,

You might want to look at Windmill's software for RS232, 485 & Modbus logging. You can trial the free version. http://www.windmill.co.uk/

What are you wanting to log by the way ?

Windmill is probably a very good software, but is there extra expense and inconvenience for me, in the USA, buying a product from GB?

Does anybody know of any good North American data logger softwares?

According to the link, you have a number of connection options, including the old standby RS-232 or usb. What you need to know is the instruction codes to tell the device to dump the data, and the format for the data stream being downloaded. I suspect it will be downloaded as hexidecimal binary, or possibly standard ASCII. Parsing the data into meaningful categories may be a chore, but most often, once you get the data into a readable form, you can figure out the parsing scheme by studying the data.

The previous recommendation of the Windmill suite would be a good choice- the paid version probably more useful than the free version. One can experiment with various instruction codes, formating options, parsing schemes, etc. until one winds up with data that can be read- which can then be read into a standard spreadsheet...

Chances are, the vendor-provided software is not necessarily going to give you the "report format" that suits your needs anyway. You would most likely have to export the data into a *.csv file to import into your spreadsheet software to get it into a form you could use. All you really need from the manufacturer is the instruction code which tells the equipment to download the data...

Turns out the software I found (through the same link as provided by Ace) is pretty good.

It will allow you to export directly into Excel or into a CSV file.

A friend of mine who is a whiz at gnuplot (??) and linux was able to compile me some wonderful graphs that support my hypothesis.

Ain't it great when your data supports your theories!

If you dont need the "PLUS" software, you can download the OM-SQ-SOFT software (supplied with theOM-SQ2040 series data loggers, allows loggerconfiguration, data download and data export while giving the user full control over the OM-SQ2040.)

From the Omega FTP site for free.
