To convert you need to replace the hand wheels with steppers or
servos. and instruct moves by getting the motor to move any distance ,
direction or speed.
You can use movement controllers like Galil or even software drivers like Mach 3,
If you can get hold of an old plotter (usually over-designed steppers) you can drive
the movement by simple HPGL or similar commands.
