Home Voltage Fluctuation

08/14/2011 1:22 PM

In my home I am facing problem of less voltage(often 199VAC).My desktop motherboard burned due to this voltage fluctuation. The UPS connected to the system showed 240V when i measured with a multimeter at an instant then going back to 200V(difference of 40V) with a ticking sound of relay. I observed the voltage hike is when the incoming supply is less than 199V.So it is automatic voltage stabilizer cum UPS. I am thinking to call the UPS service centre for some help.I cant blame them for this problem but i wonder if at all they can change the settings of UPS so that i can get a constant voltage with less voltage variation. Can i use an autotransformer of rated capacity with a voltmeter to adjust the voltage to 230V? Is there a voltage stabilizer which varies its voltage without any switching operation?

Apparently the U in your UPS isn't working as designed. Sounds like it's getting QUITE interrupted at times.

It could be that your batteries are worn out. Without them, the UPS has no choice but to put you back on-line or what they call "bypass", that may explain the clicking sound. The batteries don't last forever, they need regular testing and replacing.

Most of the cheap UPS systems available are nothing more than "on-line" power conditioners, which means they are ALWAYS floating off of the inverter. They don't really condition the power, they convert and invert constantly so as long as the batteries support the DC bus level, you are fine. But when they begin to die, they can't support the DC bus in a brown-out and switch into bypass. The problem is that because they are always on-line like that, as long as the utility power is good you are unaware that they will not work until you need them.

Better versions have an inverter ADDED to a regular power conditioner. The power conditioner works without the battery and inverter, which is there ONLY if the line supply drops below the minimum threshold of the power conditioner. Look for a UPS that says it is a ferroresonant power conditioner, or a tap-changing power conditioner. They are bigger and more expensive than the cheap little on-line UPS units because they have an actual transformer of one kind or the other as the real power conditioner.

The UPS I own is (V-Guard Slender 600) (145V to 280V) input 230V output with 15 minutes backup. It cost around 2600INR and it is one year old from the date of purchase.I tested the backup by cutting input supply and found working properly Still I will ask the service person to check the battery also.

I need the UPS settings to be changed so that for a voltage variation from 190V to 220V a constant output of 230V.

So in a good UPS the concept is if utility supply is available the UPS must not go for a bypass. The supply should be the inverted supply from battery.I am not aware of ferroresonant power conditioner but servo stabilizer sounds good.

Time to do some search on a ferroresonant transformer (or CVT).

Hi,

Hope yours is offline UPS and this UPS can be only used for emergy lighting and not for the computers. Choose the On line UPS and I am sure you will not have any problem by voltage fluctuation and choose the quality product. so as you will get highest efficiency with minimum convertion and invertion losses.

Hi,

Choose Numeric Systems or APC. Before ordering tell your problem to the UPS supplier and after successfull testing make the payment to them.

I am sure both companies can provide the pure Online UPS to you and this will not disturb your output even the Input power disturbance or failure.

Regars

Ravi

How to confirm at site whether the UPS is 'offline' or 'online' type?

All UPS are voltage stabiliser cum ups and all ups are made with autotransformer. My request is purchase a branded new one .like APC. U can find all informations @ www.apc.com. & voltage stabiliser without voltage Switching available in the market. Which is servo stabiliser. Also stabilizer avail w/o switching which are made up only ic and not used any switching device like relay.

You may use a good quality constant voltage transformer (CVT)along with your UPS so that your UPS will have to take up continuity of the power during power failure periods depending on your back capacity of UPS . The Batteries of the UPS have to be maintained and replaced if they are not getting charged properly . The life of these batteries even if it is of good quality remains 3- 5 years. So get your UPS checked for defects.

If you use UPS or not, a ferroresonant transformer (or CVT) stabilizes the voltage, and filters it nicely. Switching spikes from the power mains do not get thru. I used them with good success. Reliable.

You are right .I myself am using one for my computer since 1995 and till now it is giving perfect safe service to my computer with all the voltage fluctuations we had in all these years. It is simple sturdy reliable and maintenance free. But it is not being used by most of the present users as it is costly .
