It's very difficult, did it a few years back, I started off by taking on jobs from a few customers of my previous job who knew me already, then tried to grow it from there. But it is very tough to find new business when you are doing a project, so when you finish that project you have nothing to do until you find more business. I did not like that "roller coaster ride" aspect. I remember one year I made $8000 in November, then I made $80 in December, then zero in January because people had been virtually closed down for the holidays. I took a job with a manufacturer after that, I liked having the steady paycheck and benefits etc.

i am also an electrical engineer.

i worked from 1967 till 2001. All in the design and development department of LV switchgear companies. Picked up some knowledge of LV switchgear and controlgear. Picked up essential knowledge in peripheral fields like metals, plastics, springs, manufacturing..... Picked up CAD and analysis software skills.

After retirement, i have been working as a consultant to switchgear companies who do not have elaborate R&D departments. i bring to the table my 40+ years of experience and whatever i learnt from the great people i worked with. (In fact, i am learning now, browsing CR4).

This is my kind of consultant business. i got into it by invitation, since i was reasonably well known in LV switchgear companies.

What is your area of specialisation ? What do you offer to your clients ? What is your potential clientele profile (your market, so to say) ?

First of all collect specifications for items like generator, transformer, CB, cable, switchboards etc and combine it with proven experience and few friends having good experience for consultation in case you are in trouble.

Focus on customer's needs, and exceed their expectations. The objective is 100% customer delight.
