Sun's Atmosphere Sings

Sun's Atmosphere Sings

Astronomers have recorded heavenly music bellowed out by the Sun's atmosphere.

Snagging orchestra seats for this solar symphony would be fruitless, however, as the frequency of the sound waves is below the human hearing threshold. While humans can make out sounds between 20 and 20,000 hertz, the solar sound waves are on the order of milli-hertz—a thousandth of a hertz.

The study, presented this week at the Royal Astronomical Society's National Astronomy Meeting in Lancashire, England, reveals that the looping magnetic fields along the Sun's outer regions, called the corona, carry magnetic sound waves in a similar manner to musical instruments such as guitars or pipe organs.

It would be neat to multiply those sound up to the range of human hearing and listen to them. It might help us understand what is going on in the sun too.

Two extremely good points, StandardsGuy.

Mind you, we shouldn't really expect the 'musicality' being suggested by the article title, as the end result will probably resemble multiple simultaneous train wrecks. Nonetheless, I too would like to hear the sun singing.

And while I agree it's generally a good idea to monitor the activities of the sun for the purpose of getting to know its properties and operating principles; there's little to nothing we can do if things suddenly go wrong. That idea of snapping magnetic containment wiring scares me more than a little. I guess everything in the universe has a sensitive balance point somewhere.

I bet if you amplify it up to what us humans can hear it would be some good ol' heavy metal. Not that depressing country or stupid rap non-music stuff. If it's not heavy metal I bet it is "set the control's for the heart of the sun" by Pink Floyd. HaHa! Maybe a LITTLE "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath", uh-huh! Yeah! Now were talking!
