UL Certifications for Luminaries

08/24/2011 9:06 PM

Im working on a project and need to know if recessed light fixtures need to have a UL approval on the "can and trim" if the light "led" is already UL approved.

http://www.junolightinggroup.com/splash_vulite.asp <--- This is just an example

of a similar fixture. I've been searching on the UL site and can't find any details on this.

Does anyone have any input?

Well FBC,

Regulations are location-specific. Since we don't know where you are, how are we supposed to answer?

I was once the UL contact engineer for a small company, so here's my 2 cents worth.

First a clarification: The Underwriter's Lab doesn't 'approve' anything. UL will 'list' a product if it has been tested against one of their standards and has passed the test. That test has specific criteria that describes how the test is performed, which simulates real-life situations. The testing isn't necessarily 'worst case', but usually does include tests for common dumb mistakes people will make using a product.

Second, keep in mind that UL is a private company; it is not part of the government. UL cannot force you to comply with their standards. State and local regulations may require 'UL or equivalent' certification, so you'd need to know what regulations might apply.

So, I suggest you start by researching the specific test that was used for the LED component when it received it UL 'List' acceptance. That test should have the details of the test that include the requirements on the housing. You should also contact UL and ask what other UL tests might be required for the entire assembly to achieve UL listing.

GA.

My understanding is that anyone who wants to sell his products in the USA should have them tested, and listed by UL. No matter which part of the world that person lives in. As you say, this is not mandatory. But nobody will buy them !!! Is my understanding correct ? i would be grateful for your views. Thanks.

ps to OP: Is it Luminaries or Luminaires ? Ed.C.

I was referring to Luminaires.

This product in located in the USA. What I'm trying to figure out is if anyone has ever heard of the "Can or Trim" needing to have the UL listing. I cant seem to find anything on this so I'm going to assume that maybe its not really needed.

Normally the luminaire is sold as an assembly, a final product available for consumer purchase. When buying parts for the luminaire each item may not have the UL listing affixed.

Mixing and matching with parts not tested as a whole product may not meet the UL guidelines for the original listing, if there ever was one.

USB, dealing with UL is going to be one of my job duties for the US market with the company I'm working for.

Any advice that you have that I could use to better familiarize myself with UL would be much appreciated.

Go to the UL website http://www.ul.com/global/eng/pages/ and start familiarizing yourself. Once you contact UL they will guide you toward what you need and probably assign a contact person to you. Work with that person to get copies of the appropriate standards and to eventually set up a schedule for testing.

I found them very easy to work with.

Why should the US government allow a private company to do it,instead of creating an agency to it and to make it compulsory that all items manufactured/imported in US should comply with its standards?.

What is the law regarding consumer protection,if government cannot do it,to whom the people who elects the government can complain?. Similar to police, armed forces, customs, courts, tax department etc, consumer protection is a responsibility of the government.

'Allow'? In general, private companies can do things better, cheaper, faster, and with less political shenanigans that federal agencies.

If there was a federal agency that set standards for cell phones we'd all be walking around with cell phones the size of shoe boxes.

Not only that but I doubt we would be able to afford one of those shoe box phones...
