Re: Bye-bye to the 60W incandescent lamp.

09/01/2011 8:59 AM

Good Morning PW,

My fixture and lamp vendors (here in the US) have been telling me that the days of the incandescents are coming to an end for a couple of years now.

They are still being manufactured and are available at the present time.

I have been using the CFL's for six years now at home. The light quality did take some getting used to though.

We use quite a bit of lighting in our home and in our out buildings. I realized a 8% to 10% savings on my electric bill since installing these.

Regards - KJK

In the US -

Manufacturers have been forced to improve the efficacy of the incandescent lamps - at least for 40 through 100 watt models.

Speciality lamps are not affected.

The Energy Star site has information about it rather than the BS you read on the net.

And, just as soon as everyone gets used to CFL's we'll be forced to make the switch to LED's.

Christmas lighting has bypassed the CFL and gone directly to LED.

Progress? Who knows?

I like the LED lamps for trees. They represent a lower fire hazard. However, I wish they would use a soft white temperature.

I have a number of LED lamps installed in rooms here. They save electricity, but more important for us is they produce less heat.

We live in Florida and anything that generates heat is not a good thing (unless it is my HiFi tube amp :-) ).

My organization decorates the Palo Brea trees that line the Main Street area in our downtown for Christmas. We (contractor) install about a thousand, 100 light strings for the season. (Each tree has it's own outlet, believe it or not) These lights consume about 10% of the power of an equivalent number of incandescent lights.

When my CFL's start dying, I'll go to LED's.

It's my own design. You can see it here:

Doesn't generate much light, but it does generate heat (and sound).

Maybe you can still get 100W and 60W incandescent heaters--it's all in the name!

I use the 100 watt equivalent CFL's in place of my 60 watt incandecents. They work great, last longer than the "60" watt CFL's, and still save me money. I won't switch to LED's until china starts producing ones that last as long as they should.

(sarcasm with the china remark)

I think India already has one for standard screw in bases. $30 a piece and they won't be sold outside of India until next year. I've replaced nearly every bulb in my home and work place with CFLs. It saves a lot of money. I don't understand the romantic attachment some people seem to have for the incandescent.

I'm still trying to find CFLs that last as long as incandescents.

Easy - quit buying from the bargain bin and install correctly.

A cfl in a can upside down will probably not last well

A cfl in a cold area will probobly not last well.

The old story about short lifes for a cfl is an old wives tale.

I buy a different brand every time, but they are all made in China. Often you can tap on the bulb to get to come back on, but it won't last long.

A CFL installed sideways will probably not last well.

A CFL pointing straight down will probably not last well.

A cfl in a warm area will probably not last well.

The old story about short lifes for a cfl is an old wives tale.

The hell it is.

You don't have the foggiest idea about CFL lamps apparently.

All made in China is not equal - a multinational will insure the quality of what is produced in it's name. A large Chinese company that has learned the lesson will have good quality.

In 4 years I have yet to replace a CFL lamp - except one that was broken by the maid. All lamps in the house are CFL or T5 tube lamps except motion activated stairway lamps.

A link to youtube? I never use those for several reasons including -

1) You don't know what you are getting in to

2) Any fool can make a video and post it on youtube which is possibly the world's worst source for information.

Agreed that information on the internet is not always the best way to learn about things. I do all I can to take in any information presented with a healthy dose of skepticism.

This particular video is a well researched documentary that can offer a glimpse into the phenomenon of planned obsolescence, with a particular focus on light bulbs.

Increasing amounts of information are being made readily available to us, and it's not always neutral, or scientific or true, but it can be and it can also be a way to learn more about concepts or events that warrant greater research or scrutiny.
