All types of cable glands can be used with Ex n.

motor is Exn.

It falls in IIC area

Can IIA/IIB gland used for this motor if IIC gland is unavailable.

What is technical difference between IIA/IIB & IIC gland.

Check out the Wikipedia page on Hazardous Area electrics.

Repeating the question suggests that the device isn't actually Ex n. Please state full details of the Ex n equipment including manufacturer and part number.

The worrying thing about hazardous area electrical equipment queries, is that the query indicates that the originator is working beyond the horizons of his/her training to date.

If in doubt, stop, and request suitable training.

You cannot use it in IIC classified area. The cable gland of gas group IIA or IIB are not suitable for the gas group of IIC (such as for Acetylene or hydrogen), so this cable gland will not protect the explosion of Acetylene or hydrogen coming out from the enclosure, and hence it is not safe.

This seems weird to me. I have never seen the explosion proof cable gland suitable only for gas group IIA and IIB. Generally, cable glands are suitable for all IIA, IIB and IIC. Here is the Hawke cable gland for classified area: http://www.ehawke.com/cableglands/753.html

The motor is stated as being <...Exn...>, though, therefore it doesn't have the capability of producing an <...explosion...> (doesn't sound right, though that is what the Original Poster has stated).

One might expect the terminals' enclosure to be at least Ex 'e' or Ex 'd':

  • No special precautions needed with Ex 'e'.
  • Ex 'd' cable glands are needed with an Ex 'd' motor terminal enclosure.

And:

  • Operatives designing, specifying, fitting and testing the equipment need special training, so that this type of question doesn't get asked.
