Yes you might get product knowledge that you are bound not to get that quick at straight engineering jobs.

Please do not compromise engineering principles to get a sale.

There is money in sales and why don't make it longer? (of course I don't know the company but good engineering equate to increased sales)

Are you a raving nut case, you became a fully qualified engineer for what to become a bloody door to door salesman, practice your proffesion and let the hired help do that type of work, become inventive and own the company in a few years.

A Sales Engineer is not a bloody door to door salesman or telesales or a supermarket attendant.

They are consulted by big and small customers and are bound to get better exposure and experience to pumping engineering and related matters than most on CR4.

Sales Engineers are among the highest paid among us. This is what an engineer with personality does! Who do you think is qualified to sell to a senior plant engineer, a business graduate?

OP, yes, if someone thinks you can sell and you are an engineer, you must jump on the opportunity. There will always be later to stop making money and go back to tinkering.

I typically recommend the inverse procedure: first work in engineering to master a product, later move into the sales department to engineer in front of customers.

In this economy grab whatever position you can grab. Do the inside grunt work for an experienced sales engineer and learn everything you possibly can. There is no disgrace in doing sales. Who would you want to best represent your company, a salesman or an engineer?

In your course of study did they teach you about pumps?. Otherwise you should spend at least one year in their workshop in repairing pumps, fabricating boosters, fire fighting sets with diesel driven/electric motor driven pumps and jockey pump etc to learn materials required to fabricate a unit in a base frame, electric control panels, pressure switches, flow switches etc so that you can estimate the cost of a pumping system. In the mean time you should learn the theory of pumps, their types/applications,selection, sizing, cost of spares/labour/overhead charges etc. Also you should study the pumps marketed by your competitors, their advantages/disadvantages,cost/price etc. You should be able to answer any question put forward by a consultant or client and learn how to prepare a quotation/tender document. Should be familiar with site visits to study site requirements and offer a suitable pump including electricals.

Are you expected to just answer phones and write orders, not a good way to hone your engineering expertise, or will you be expected to specify product as an applications engineer? Unless you have product knowledge and are familiar with the ways that product is used, you will have a difficult time working with a customer in satisfying their needs. A customer on the other end of the phone doesn't care that you are new to the industry, he wants viable answers otherwise he will have the opinion that your company is just a bunch of bozos and go elsewhere either this time or the next.

I suggest you take an engineering position where you can immerse yourself in the details of the product until you are confident that you can go one-on-one with the customer. I did service in applications and found it very satisfying to be able to specify the setup of a customers system and hear back from them both when the system functioned to their needs and anytime there were problems. They had enough confidence in me to contact me first.

Hi hadioden

One problem with working as a Sales Engineer is that you may miss out on registration as a Professional Engineer .

You MUST investigate the effect on you thoroughly and make a informed decision.

You must also expect that the company will "bribe" you to stay with them by offering a better package when you want to move along.

Your to be employer is looking forward to groom you for a marketing job. There is nothing bad in that, but you must have a sound knowledge of the products you want to sell. Though, it is possible they give you a superficial training but that may not be enough for you to face the clients who are smarter, more sophisticated, more demanding, more futuristic, more pre-emptive, less patient, highly cost and time conscious, non-forgiving (not even less forgiving), more suspicious and above all, may be irrational, confused and incredibly stupid most especially if they are a bit impressed by the dexterity of your craftmanship. This is possible only if you have the skill. You can discuss with the prospective employer to groom you. With your inside out knowledge of all types of pumps and fluid mechanics you can sell ice to the Eskimos

Sales is not a bad place to be. It will help you to learn about your customer's needs, rather than your manufacturing department's needs.

Also, I suggest if you continue in the field of communication, (which sales most definely is) that you brush up on your spelling and grammar. Its not as difficult as being an engineer, and it will help you to sell the most important thing. Yourself.

I know of someone that started out as a sales engineer for a distributor of hydraulic components with a business degree. He got quite good at his trade. The distributor offered classes to the industry and he became an instructor. The position offered him opportunities to offer consulting on the side. Eventually, one offered him a direct hire position. While working, he went back to school and got his mechanical engineering degree and then his PE.

It does not matter the path you take to get to where you want as long as the path has a future and you continue to advance along the path. As a new engineer, you will find challenges in this job as a sales engineer. I would take the opportunity and stay on it until a better opportunity arises or this one becomes too routine without challenges.

Hadioden, only you can decide what is best for you, but here are some considerations. Absolutely #1 criterion is this: do you enjoy selling? If that answer is no, then keep looking, your sales manager will make your life Hell on Earth. He only looks good to his boss if you perform well.

If you enjoy selling, go for it, remembering the first words one sees when entering the Ford Tractor Operations Sales Training School in Paris, Texas: "Nothing happens until somebody sells something." You will be entering the arena where the company that hires you takes the risk of significant loss if you perform poorly. For that reason, if you falter, you will be quickly replaced. It is not a happy environment for the timid.

Some of the benefit that will come to you, in addition to a sustainable compensation package, is contact with a fairly large number of potential sources of engineering jobs, or even the potential to develop your own business, over time, as an engineering consultant. Product knowledge and being able to discuss the engineering aspects of the sale will help build that. But I strongly suggest additional work on your written communication skills. You may be a satisfactory communicator with verbal skills, but please learn to construct a grammatically correct simple declarative sentence in written English. You will greatly enhance your perceived value to any potential employer.

Just don't include the word "dose" in your sales presentations when you mean "does". It makes your valuable college education look like that of Jethro Bodean.
