It depends on which type. Are the balls also metal or plastic? Same metal or different? Looks like I am asking the questions. But I am a big dummy head.

In the same way as tiny nails are manufactured, may be by injection molding.

For the benefit of all those who are wondering what is this thing that Yeswanth is talking about...here is an image.

A simple pin with a point on one side and a head on the other. All Indians have, at one time or another, pricked their unfortunate finger with one, and have had copious blood flow.

As you can see, Indian banks still insist on the use of these to clip papers together, staples are forbidden.

Yeswanth, when you are at it, can you also find out how these are made...

Sewing needles

Balls for bearings

How these are squeezed between the races to make a bearing

Model ships in bottles

etc etc

You will be doing a great service to all those who do not know, but haven't the nerve to ask....

Re: How Paper Pins Are Manufactured???

they are made the same way nails are made, wire is rolled off a spool, clamped in a split die and a hammer die forms the head, and a grinding head makes the point, then it goes to a plating bath. if they are then to have a plastic ball then they are clamped in a similar split die and plastic is injection molded over the head.

haven't you guys ever heard of a paper clip? far safer, no chance of giving each other Hepatitis C or HIV from a contaminated pin.

As you can see, Indian banks still insist on the use of these to clip papers together, staples are forbidden.

A stupid, archaic rule, probably a British legacy from the days when paper clips and staples weren't available.

We would love to change, but we have about the same chance of convincing a federal bank to change their rules as you have of convincing yours.

Would love that...but class action in India ? Union Carbide killed thousands in Bhopal and got away with a $700 Million slap on the wrist.

It would be like...

True, but $700 million is still $700 million... nobody likes to lose even that much... besides that is what the cricket bats are for....

You bet there are bloodstains !!!

As i said earlier, these are only used for one purpose in banks, to pin cheques (checks) to the pay-in slips. Some elderly people in US and Europe may remember such systems in your banks aeons ago. Here, while we have the latest electronic systems to transact in banks, when we need to deposit cheques, we have to use those pins provided by the bank (the same one, which has advanced web-based banking!) .... please note the rust on them. Anti-tetanus is NOT provided by the bank.

How Paper Pins Are Manufactured???

09/16/2011 1:06 PM

paper pins ( ball pins), nails, screw blanks are made by 'Cold forging'. In an automatic machine the coil of wire feeds the material. At the measured length the wire is 'cut-off', point shrpened and the other end hammed to form a head.

The pin is oily due to continuous lubrication / cooling fluid. A lot is dumped into a rotating drum filled with saw dust. The pin is dried in this drum and then sent for electro-plating.

presto- your pin is ready for use.

they are not molded, only plastic heads are molded, and then only for those pins that have plastic heads, most don't. they are "headed" from wire, in the same way nails are made.

"Ball pins.." .

Yeswanth, are you asking about one of these:

These are called 'Map Pins'.

How many pins in a game of Ten Pin Bowling? How many bowling balls will fit on the wings of a Boeing 747 jet airplane? What comes after second base? wiki.answers.com. has these answers.

Our friend kvsridhar posted the image in #11, and also a Youtube video in #6. Is that not what you are looking for? The video is not very technical, but it does show the pins being made.
