Equal Material for SA517 GR B

09/26/2011 1:59 AM

Hello every body,

We have LPG tankers and body material is SA517 GR B. Unfortunately this material is not available in my country's market. I need to find an equivalent ASME material for above material. Any information in this regard shall be appreciated.

Thanks very much!

What is the temperature/pressure range of the LPG?

(SA517-B is suggested for boilers. For lower temperatures, SA516-70 is likely to be a better candidate, as well as more widely available.)

I think SA516-70 would be ideally suited for this duty, and it is a readily available pressure-vessel-quality plate.

but allowable stress for sa516 gr70 is 20000 and for main material is 32900 so thickness will be about 1.65 time thiker.

Such is the domain of Engineering Judgement. Sooner or later one makes a decision and gets on with it, and to hell with the consequences.

ASME SA 516 Grade 70 is is pressure vessel plates, carbon steel, for moderate and lower temperature service, used for fabrication of stationary LPG pressure vessels with:

- Min tensile strength 70 000 psi,

- Min. yield strength 40 000 psi, and

- Allowable tensile strength 20 000 psi,

ASME SA 517 Grade P (< 2-1/2") is pressure vessel plates, alloy steel (1.25 Ni, 1 Cr, 0.5 Mo), high-strength, quenched and tempered, used to fabricate LPG transport tanks (truck mounted vessels) for its high strength to allow lesser thickness for lighter weight, with:

- Min tensile strength 115 000 psi,

- Min. yield strength 100 000 psi, and

- Allowable tensile strength 32 900 psi

Conclusion, no way to use SA 516 instead of SA 517.

I misread "tankers" as "tanks" (i.e., mobile vs. stationary). This makes my earlier post #3 OT. Thanks for calling attention to this.

If SA517-P is not usually available locally, the OP may try to find an importer. Checking also for differences in welding procedure for the higher-strength material.

thank you very much

it seems we have to check other soureces from othe countries to find main material .in my own opinion using of SA516 will increase thickness at least 1.65 times which is not acceptable.

dear alinazarian

Greeting to you

i want to tell you how you can make agood selection to a comparative material to any material you need

please flow the next step to help you

1- get the chemical compostion of this material

2- get also the mechanical propertises of this material

note: you can get the information tn step 1 & 2 from ASME sec II part A (in case of ferrous materials like material SA 517 GR. P which you ask about ) or part B ( in case of non- ferrous material like copper)

3- make a review on the scope of work for this material and the other materials which have the same scope of work. for example in your case. the materials which use in LPG tanks like sa 285, 515, 516, 517, 537, 612 .......etc

4-compare this material with each materials which have the same scope of work and this comparison must be in chemical compostion in firist then in mechanical propertises

5- select the nearest material depending on step 4

for more help you can use hand book of camparative material.

and i think that material SA 612 is agood selection in place of AS 517 BUT YOU MUST CHECK IT.

sorry if i not busy, i was gave the exact comparative material.
