Assistance on Acetylene Generator.

04/23/2007 5:46 AM

Most roadside welders here uses small home made acetylene generator for gas welding. these generators needs improvement for better quality and safety. can anyone give me all necessary assistance? contact me through:

<Most roadside welders >

Because they want to sell the service of welding-SOMETHING - at places where there is no electric power.

Had there been Electric Power --Somebody like you (if not Govt.)would have switched them over to:

  • Air Plasma Cutting
  • Stud Welding
  • MIG/MAG welding
  • MMA
  • Or machines combining 2 or 3 of above functions

Above are now available most readily by Container load at low-low prices from China.

I would assume that roadside welders would use a gasoline powered generator like they do here if they wanted to do arc welding...

If they wanted to do gas welding or brazing, then oxy-acetylene seems to be the obvious choice...

But if they don't have a source of compressed acetylene cylinders then where are they getting their oxygen?

How do the current acetylene generators work?

I am guessing calcium carbide and water...

Perhaps add an acetone buffer between the generator and the torch to keep the pressure from getting too high...

I am not sure what the quality and safety issues you have are.

I think he is concerned/thinking about these:

  • Must it all be that messy with water, lime, waste dumps
  • Must it be that inefficient-the poor small scale of it all / labour intensive
  • Must it be that inefficient-you cannot do more than weld a hole or adent on the max 1 mm thick body of a bike, scooter, car
  • Could it not be changed to something befitting times-one man -powerful versatile? Cutting any plate up to 20 mm thick, efficiently welding up anything from 1mm up to 20mm -- any metal--and all with super-efficiency- Electrically

Get on e-bay and buy a gas powered welder with a 8-10 kw generator built into it and a small plasma that can cut up to 5/8" metal. Next buy a small air compressor. use the generator to run the plasma and air compressor to cut with and the welder to weld it all up afterwards. This is not very expensive (2500-3500.00) and it is very reliable. I use this method all the time when I do road work from my small welding fab. business. We have acetylene cylinders here in the US this is the most efficient way I know to get it. Just rent them from the local welding supply. It is hard to believe that you are still using those primitive generators to make it out in the field. I have seen these acetylene generators many years ago and way back then it was just a demonstration of how it is made. My hat is off to any welder that has to make his on though.

Mr. Pipewelder good day to you. I would like to depend the thread owner from your comment, may be I am on the same footings with the thread owner why we are still interested to use the old technology, primitive as you call it.The reason behind is cost reduction, as i see it the cost for acetylene could be reduced to, by as much as 60% if you are generating your own C2H2.
