DVR 12V/5A PSU

10/15/2011 6:40 AM

I have a Digital Video Recorder used to record/playback/view cameras in a CCTV system.

It is supplied by 12V from its external power supply, rated 12V d.c/5A.

Fault: The PSU gives output of 12V d.c with NO LOAD i.e not connected to DVR, but when connected, the voltage drops to about 3V.

Any ideas where I should start and what components should I check first.

Thanks All

First you must make sure if the power supply in good condition, try use power supply with another load first, then see if the out put voltage of power supply not drop, if the PSU output drop, so the faulty come from the PSU, if not, usually there is another voltage regulator built inside the Digital Video Recorder for 5 volt DC and 3,6 volt DC, check that built in regulator first, hope can solve your problem.

Thanks for your reply

I have already checked PSU with another load and it still drops voltage from 12.5 to about 3V. Also I checked internal voltage regulator in DVR which at first I thought to be faulty. I checked 12V in, 5V & 3.6V out, all seem O.K. Also I supplied DVR from another Power Supply which I use for repairs (i.e it has variable voltage up to 30V d.c.and current limiter and voltage & current reading display.) So DVR is O.K. since it functioned properly. My problem now is to find faulty component or components in the external PSU.

I wish I had good idea of what type of component is most likely to cause this considerable volt drop.

Usually one or two capacitors faulty.

Check the nameplate of the DVR. What voltage and amperage does it call for?

Today, a good 5 amp Switched mode (important) supply can be bought for around $20 new on ebay....just pick one with a rating at 12 volts.

I rate my time at $50 per hour, and you could spend days fixing it, changing components that you need to pay postage on etc etc etc..

e.g.its not worth wasting your time on.....and if its broke, it was probably badly made/designed in the first place.....
