10/24/2011 7:25 AM

Dear all,

Please confirm whether the growth of plants or vegetation is possible in silty sand which will be used for construction work?

Also confirm that the same can happened in sand itself?

Awaiting for experts reply....

Thanks to all.

...some plants that are transported via bird droppings and/or winds can proliferate in silty soil given that the soil has enough nutrient to sustain them. also; plants that require lots of water will tend to shoot their roots below several feet of the silt in search of water given the fact that silty-sand does not retain much moisture. you will observe that most vegetation in silty soil consists of patchy grasses and weeds; you may also see the beginnings of some trees but they don't do very well!

I hope this can help;;;

If your goal is to prevent the growth of plants or vegetation, or hinder it as much as possible, then

(1) have the silty sand compacted as much as possible following construction and smoothed flat, and

(2) use landscaping fabric, which is designed to prevent plant growth, to cover the area, and

(3) cover the fabric with a thick layer of sand. Some kind of curb or boundary is advised to contain the sand area. The area can then be maintained by raking periodically to keep it level and remove weeds.

There is no soil on earth impervious to plants if seed and water fall upon it, even concrete and stone itself becomes a place for life.

Some of the best agricultural land in the UK is in the fens (just south of the Wash). The soil is predominantly silt.

I used to grow flowers and vegetables in sand + the right chemicals in water.
This was (1950's) long before the large commercial hydroponics, (I certainly
missed the opportunities) with the huge tomato cucumber, etc, outfits today!

They have stopped using any medium now, just water and chemicals.

jt.

of pattern.

You'll have to check with your local experts, but states like Arizonia grow vegetation all the time in silty sand soil.

Arizonia DOT has severial seed mixtures that are used. Your best bet is to check with your local experts, DOT, or environmental group.

Yes to both questions.....even in the hottest and most barren of deserts vegetation will grow there......almost anywhere on the planet for that matter!

One cautionary note, sometimes construction sand collected near the ocean has a high salt content. This will limit what can grow in it.

The OP hasn't clarified yet whether he wants plants to grow or doesn't want plants to grow.
