SolidWorks would be one possibility. For pictorials like this, even Google Sketchup might work. I haven't used either, so these are only ideas, not endorsements.

You might send ChrisG288 a PM on this; he is fluent, indeed artistic, in 3D design.

An acquaintance who builds tiny, elaborate models for movies is an enthusiastic booster of Bentley MicroStation.

SolidWorks is widely used, and is probably less expensive than either AutoCad or MicroStation. The consumer version of SketchUp is free, and you can try the pro version for 8 hours at the same price.

SolidWorks in NOT cheap!

I have an old version from about 1997 and when I inquired about an upgrade, I was quoted $8995 plus $1250 per year maintenance fees.

There are so many freeware programs available I would suggest doing a Google search and trying a few out.

Blender comes to mind. Since Blender is free Open Source software, it could possibly be more "cost effective" than traditional CAD programs for this sort of work. But it is so loaded with features and capabilities, the learning curve is quite steep.

You could probably generate something similar in Inkscape a whole lot easier...Another free Open Source solution.

If you have predefined models of the various components, you could probably come up with something very similar in Salome, (yet another free Open Source solution), although probably not as "artistic" as you might achieve with Blender.

I am not convinced that traditional CAD programs are ideal for illustrative type work such as this. The image appears to be more of an "illustration" than a "technical" or "design" type drawing, which points more to the Blender or Inkscape type software.

Hi

Have a look at Alibre Design, it has all the functionality you need at a fraction of the price. It really is good.

Libraries of these sorts of components is going to be pretty difficult to find. You may find leads to what you are looking for by exploring the EPRI web site, but such specialized software is very unlikely to be reasonably priced. You may also want to have a look at links from EDF in Europe, especially in the forums.

I use Altium. It is not cheap either, you can get a 30 day trial version. Altium can do the complete job though, schematic, PCB, 3D model, BOM, version tracking and more.

You might look at VIZIO (VISIO?). Not sure if they handle electrical but your model resembles their look to me.
