HAMs are Back

11/22/2011 12:06 PM

After the internet it looked like HAM radio would be consigned to the history books, but wait... Surprise! Surprise!

HAM Radio Returns

It is good to see a resurgence of this hobby.

Ham radio? Is there an app for that?

What's old is new again. Glad to see it.

FM'ers and SSB'ers unite!

I didn't realize they ever went anywhere, they always seemed to be Johnny on the spot when there was a Natural Disaster! Give them any form of electricity and they'll be on the air broadcasting

...and if you don't have electricity, we will bring our own. One of the big events in amateur radio is "FIELD DAY" at which we set up stations and make contacts WITHOUT using commercial power. Generators are popular, along with solar power, wind, or even human powered generating. As a kid, it was like a ham radio campout.

The Networks they have now are amazing. Us Sailboat people could not live without them. Hooray for Hams. I think they will be even more important in the future..

You will find that (for the most part) Hams are some of the best people around. If someone has a problem, other Hams are more than willing to lend a hand.

In the US, you no longer have to know morse code. Testing is done by a group of local Volunteer Examiners (Of which I am one). Some people get nervous when they go in to take the tests, but you need to realize that those ogres shuffling paperwork want to see you pass as much as you do.

In Hungary there are two categories: with or without Morse. In the sixties I was telegrapher in the Army (that was my compulsory military service). After it I was the chief operator of a collective station (now I have that call sign) for years and there several children have fallen in love with SW communication.

I could talk on this subject for hours, but I will be good, and refer all who are interested to the Amateur Radio Relay League (in the US) www.arrl.org .

There are similar organizations in other parts of the world too.

Back?? I doubt if any HAM devotees ever left their hobby. The "back" means the attention of those who forgot them.

You are right. On the other hand, recently several youngsters have started to turn to the radio communication.

Great! I'm not a HAM operator myself, but anything that gets young people using their thumbs (and brains) for something other than Texting has got to be a positive.
