Need a Supplier for a Metric Screw Please!

11/28/2011 5:03 PM

Good afternoon,

I am looking for a vendor here in the US to purchase a very small metric screw from. I've called the local fastener houses, a couple of big catalog houses and searched the web, all to no avail!!! Here are the spec's:

1.6mm OD x 0.35(assumed) pitch x 20mm long with a pan-style head and phillps or cross-point type drive. I could -possibly- go as long as 24 or 25mm but would need to investigate.

I only need a small quantity, and fifty pieces would probably be a lifetime supply. If you are able to supply a small quantity of these at a reasonable cost, please respond.

Thank you for your help!

Fastenal is where I would try first (locally), If they don't have something in stock, they will find it and order it for you.

It's the low qty that's going to make things difficult, it's hard to motivate someone to help you when it only means a couple bucks of profit for them.

Thank you, I did try them. Most of these places only go to 2mm, and if they 1.6mm, they only go to 10 or 12mm long.

Not much help for your search, but I hope to hell that you're fixing some old kit.

Any designer who specified such an unusual fastener without second- or (preferably) third-sourcing it should be fired.

I am looking for replacements for OEM parts. They come from Japan, and I will explain the application in response to the next poster's comment.

And yes, they probably should be canned for using such a miniature, hard to find screw!

If you can go to a 1/16" = 1.588mm it would be a lot easier...What is the application?

That would be perfect if they make a longer version; at least it is a possible source to contact.

Thank you Solar Eagle for the link. The screw that comes up is 3mm long, but I will check with them to see if they can provide it in the length I need!

Your results are similar to what I was finding, but I do not recall contacting this vendor.

Re: Need a supplier for a Metric screw please!

Thank you Solar Eagle. Not sure I could use the 1/16" dia. The application is a replacement mounting screw for a Japanese pneumatic valve. I am a distributor for the line and have contacted them but it would seem to be a fair amount of red tape to get the answer, and I don't wish to pay $5.00 a piece for them. I am still waiting on the OEM for an answer, but I am also pursuing my options on my own.

So, somebody out there makes these things, but they don't seem to be readily available Stateside. I also recognize the insanity of asking some screw house to make me a dozen or two. So we're just looking for a little help from our friends!

Thank you

Thanks ozzb, I am familiar with them and have already called them. They are a good house with a broad range of stuff, but no little screws for me.

Can you sense my frustration yet?? Sorry to make this so difficult!

If your need is such that you are willing to have them made and can afford "a couple lifetimes supply" contact me privately and I will forward you the name of some swiss machining houses who could likely fabricate this for you.

Try calling Handy Ace Hardware in Tucker, GA at 770-939-6842. They have an amazing fastener selection - including a full aisle of metric and a full aisle of stainless. The second best hardware store in the country!

If you only need one to hold you over while you search for a supplier how about taking one from old electronic or other devices you have laying around? calculator; watch; computer parts & accessories; toys; -- the list of donor items is limited only by your imagination.

Try "http://www.mcmaster.com" They have the screw but not in the length. Call them, they might be able to get it from their supplier. I've been using them for over 15 years and there's not much they can't get...

Good Luck....

These guys stock your screw in the UK. M1.6x0.35 20 long pozi pan. Maybe they can ship to the States.

You could try searching for DIN7985 screws.

If all else fails, I could buy them here & post to you.

1.6mm is not a metric size, it could be BA, & I don't think it's inch size either so BA is my bet.See how the blog goes if there is no solution Next time I go to my workshop Ill have a measure of the BA stock that I've got, I don't have many & they are like hens teeth to get hold of over here & getting harder by the week.

I used to always get my metric needs looked after by McMaster Carr (www.mcmaster.com). Extensive selection. Another option is if your company has a distributor in Europe who can pick them up at the local h/w store and mail them to you. usually payment is in the way of favors!

Thank you one and all, I believe I am all set for now. My vendor insists on letting him get the screws for me, but should they fail, I believe I will be using the fastener house in England recommended by "Nigh", as they appear to have the screw on hand and ready to ship!
