Dent Removal procedures

04/27/2007 11:22 PM

Could anyone throw light on dent removal methods on cars, which could be done at home garage.........obviously without expensive equipment in place. I have come across a video on net, where in you locally heat the dent with hair dryer for about a minute or so and immediately spray with CO2 for about 10 secs. The dent automatically unwraps as if there was no dent. Its basically expansion of metal and immediate contraction which results in the phenomenon..............I am interested in knowing such cool methods.....never mind even if a little bit of hands on work is also required.................any say gentlemen.

I have heard of a flat plate with a vacum pump being used to pull out small dents.

Dry ice applied to the deepest point (as small of an area as possible) is supposed to assist the metal in seeking its original state by shrinking that area and pulling the dent out.

dunno from first hand, though have heard stories of success,

This has been a topic of interest lately with the Paintless Dent Removal franchises growing by leaps and bounds.

Include me in the discussion for all of the well thought out ideas I know will be presented here by my colleagues.

I don't want to add to you misery with a bad pun , but this all 'hinges ' on whether the dent is nicely curved or if you've got a sharp angular change in contour. If it's the former and small , the trusty plunger method can give amazing results . The latter has no easy answer I know of , other than a well bribed pannel basher - a good one can do it + quick . It's a skilled job. Exotic methods may sound good , but how many did they film before posting the good one . I'm too busy to follow this , but best of luck - 'don't beat yourself up over it' as they say , patience and a bit of humour will get you there.

An old body work book I somewhere deep in the garage went through the procedures for back when cars had substantial metal to work with but the the principals are still good. With the methods you are trying, the most important that they state is to determine the point of impact and apply your corrective force there. Bascially to minimize the number of blows (plungers, etc.) concentrate the force at the point of impact, not working your way in. (DUH!)

I don't know about the now-a-day car, but for older car (where they have steel as part of the body, instead of plastic), they use a device that have a screw on one end, and weight striker on the other end. They would screw in the screw, and then use the other end to "pull" the screw out by "hammering" the weight against the other end. The idea is to "pop" the dent out where the screw is screw into. Of course the screw need to be screw in the center of the dent.

Also, as mention by other posts, they have these vacuum dent puller thing out there too, but I think they only work on more modern car where the body is compose of plastic and very little steel.
