Look up ultra sonic measurment techniques.

Try more details about your problem:

"I need to find out how I can measure the [free stream velocity of XX][velocity of XX fluid as it flows through YY] (Choose one and fill in the blanks)"

"The range of velocities is from about AA to BB" . "The necesary precision is [Not so precise][precise][real precise]". "I'd like it if I had a [digital data stream][analog voltage signal][visual indication like a U-tube][A rough indication, like looking at a flag]".

There's at least 4 different ways to gage this that I can think of, each more appropriate to one circumstance than the other.

Moon161,

How I sympathise with your question.

I was thinking that we use a water pitot tube or a GPS to measure the speed of our boats - see www.explorermarine.co.uk - through the water.

Without a definition of what we are trying to measure, it is very hard to suggest a useful solution

Universal Flow Monitors in Warren, MI USA at www.flowmeters.com may have what you need. I use them for variuos applications.

IF YOU ARE MOVING FLUID THROUGH A DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM IT IS FOR A PURPOSE, HEATING COOLING. WHATEVER THE DEVICE BEING SERVED YOU CAN OBTAIN THE PRESSURE DROP FROM THE MANUFACTURER OR FABRICATOR. MEASURE THE PRESSURE DROP( PIPE BOTHE SIDES TO THE SAME GAGE WITH ISOLATION VALVES AND READ THE DELTA. YOU CAN ALSO USE THE PUMP MANUFACTURERS PUMP CURVE AND USE THE PUMP TRAVERSE READING MATCH THE PIPE SIZE AND DEVELOPED LENGTH AND COMPARE TO THE CHARTS IN A MANUAL SUCH AS DESIGN OF FLUID SYSTEMS BY SPIRAX/SARCO. IF YOU NEED GREATER ACCURACY THE YOU CAN PURCHASE MEASURING DEVICES THROUGH SOMEONE SUCH AS 'KELE' IN MEMPHIS, TN. ENJOY. CONWAYMECH@YAHOO.COM

Try using Wikipedia type in flow measurement and see what you get or just click on the link provided. This should give you most of the information you are looking for.. Enjoy.

I just have to ask. Why are you being asked to do a presentation about something you know nothing about? This is a vast subject and I don't like your chances of sounding knowledgable in front of an audience unless you have a lot of time to research.

Very Basic Question--

'Why Presentation-- when you are trying hard to learn- from scratch'?

I'm not knocking anybody for trying to learn but I took it that the original post saying "I have representation, so I need help" means that the poster has to make a presentation about this subject.

I would be the first to offer any useful advice if I could give it but this question is very broad and the subject matter is vast. There are also any number of books and web sites around which cover fluid velocity measuring devices which you can get a general overview of before studying the subject in more detail.

I have no idea what this poster wants to know. I have a fluid dynamics book-mechanics of fluids 8th edition by bernard massey which is an excellent book and gives a brief description of flow measurement. Easy to understand but not in depth. Then I have another book. It's an instrumentation book by a guy called Bennet I think. He talks about ultrasonic flow meters but you need to have a fairly good grasp of instrumentation and maths to follow what he is talking about.

I get the feeling that this person needs lots of information quickly and because this is such a big subject I wouldn't like to be the one who has to learn an entire industry overnight.

I am glad that you have found " Mechanics of Fluids" useful.

When I was an undergraduate at UCL in London, Prof Bernard Massey was my Fluid Dynamics lecturer. I can assure you that he knew the book by heart as he gave lectures without notes and we could always tell which page he was " doing".

He always emphasised the importance of having the latest edition, but I suspect that was more to do with sales than anything else.

I now lecture in Aerodynamics, and I still use that same book

Wish I knew as much as Prof Massey. I studied physics at uni and didn't go into fluid dynamics much but now I wish I had done mechanical engineering with fluid dynamics as a major. I sort of fell into my job as a maintenance engineer but because nobody else here knows anything about fluid dynamics I have taught myself alot. Profs book is really good when I can't remember off the top of my head how to work out something. He's done a good job in reducing the maths as much as possible which is a plus point in my opinion.

Would have been nice to have a teacher who knows his stuff like that.

Maca,

These days there is so much to do, that there is hardly time to learn!

I like the science problems, be they fluids, or mechanics or physics, where I can see and understand the answer and then use it to solve a useful problem. Not for me the theoretical and the academic, just the real problems with real and useful solutions

Regards

Hugh
