12/11/2011 6:59 AM

Hi, can anyone give me advice on how I can remove a fully corroded bolt from a distilled water box (salt water)?

One method: cut or grind off the bolt head and/or nut, and drive out the bolt shank with a punch.

Be sure to replace the defective bolt with stainless steel 304/316 hardware.

Sometimes Lyn, depending upon the application, going back with S/S hardware proves to be a mistake. I have done this in past cases and then years later remembered how easy it was to just cut off the head of the steel offending bolt with oxy/accet. Not so easy once S/S is in place.

Every situation differs greatly as we all know, and photos or drawings (that we never get) are very helpful in making the proper suggestion.

What Tornado said pretty much sums it up. GA from me!

I just want to add a few things......

You may want to either torch the offending bolt off or use a plasma cutter. It really depends on where the nut and bolt head is is located, and if the fastener passes through to water retaining steel (?) box, or is located outside the box. If it passes through the wall, then absolute care in removal of the bolt must be taken, otherwise you may damage the wall or it's coating. We have no information regarding the type, size, it's placement (location), and grade of the bolt, nor the type of steel, it's thickness, grade, etc.

Usually, if a bolt is heavily corroded and the threads are intact, then using a oxy-acetylene torch to heat up the fastener will work in breaking up rust deposits. Sometimes you can use a very good penetrating oil to do this as well, like PB Blaster.

OP, you need to provide us with much more information, otherwise our hands are tied trying to effectively answer your question.

You could melt it out with an oxy acetylene torch, or a plasma cutter. I would probably just drill it out.

Cut off the extended corroded portion of the bolt. Pour sufficient anti siez compound on the body thread. wait some time and then weld a nut over the cut-off portion. Weld on inside of nut with the stud portion. use electrods of very good strength. You will be successful in driving out the studs.

We sure can....what size is the bolt, picture would be great...how accessible is the bolt...what is the thickness of the material that the bolt holds, is it all stainless?..are there any flammable materials in the area?...does the bolt have a nut or is it threaded into the box?

I would hope by now he got it out.... I couldn't imagine getting an A## kicking by a simple bolt for three days!

Pretty tough to explain in a report and very easy to say our poor guy is in the wrong profession I would think.

Tim is right but just for the record...

Frequently in these situations the bolt head is sheared off in the effort to extract it. In that case, the bolt may be extracted by arc welding a blob of filler to the sheared end so as to provide a purchase for the visegrips. In the process, plenty of heat is applied to get the trapped stub up to cherry red. This will cause the diameter of the bolt to shrink upon cooling making it easy to withdraw.
