Spring Load a LCD Monitor Mount

12/16/2011 2:33 AM

I would like to spring load a vertical adjusting monitor mount.

The mount could be as simple as two square telescoping tubes with a flat plate to attach to the LCD monitor.

What kind of spring counter balance would be used?

I haven't been able to find an available low profile height adjustable mount for purchase as the fire codes restrict depth to 6".

Hi normnet,

I would consider using a "Gas Spring", it will give a more constant rate than a steel spring. The gas inside can be bled off, to counterbalance the weight of the monitor, and it could be fitted between your two guide rods.

Best regards,

John

Can you explain why a fire code would be even remotely interested in this?

There are many different types for height and/or swivel configurations available...

The picture to the left is a start.

The mount needs to be a wall mount and adjustable by simply lifting up or down.

It appears to be OK with the 6" maximum from the wall.

Require height adjustable and no arm to keep within 6".

Seems like you could buy two of these, and combine them with one side bolted to wall and other to monitor...

Hi again normnet,

Thinking about your "problem", how much does the monitor weigh and how much do you need it to move in total.

Best regards,

John

I'm not sure of the weight. I will try get it tomorrow.

Move total could be from 5" to 10".

This is what I am looking at at present:

One telescoping square tubing and one of the 3 listed gas springs:

Heavy Duty Telescoping-Tube Framing, 2 1/4" Stroke, 4931T145 http://www.mcmaster.com/#telescoping-tubing/=fe72fh

Gas Springs with Ball-Joint Fittings, 15 lbs. Force, 8.27" Stroke, 4138T581, page 1188

Remote-Release Gas Springs with Ball-Joint Fitting, 20 lbs. Force, 10" Stroke, 9833T31, page 1191

Reducible-Force Gas Springs with Fittings, 90 lbs. Max. Force, 7.87" Stroke, 6465K92, page 1190

The gas spring would be enclosed by the tubing.

Staff would only be required to lift up or push down to position.

I'm not sure how to hold at position however except if locking gas spring.

Hi Norm,

Looks like you have got it pretty well sorted. You might need some sort of external lock, a spring loaded pad to be released to move the monitor or if the gas spring force can be set near to the counterbalance weight of the system the spring loaded stop could be made with just be enough friction to hold the screen wherever you want.

Best of luck

John

Not telescoping but would give you your tolerance off the wall. If you keep the depth of the monitor to 4 inches.

Just basic drawing what you need to do to make it look good is up to you.

Use a vertical weight balanced window sash.

Replace the window glass with your monitor.
