Frequency Change From 50 to 60 hz

12/23/2011 12:30 AM

Is it ok to change a masterdrive speed set point up to 60hz for a motor that is rated at 50hz?

Not always - check with the manufacturer (not only of the motor, but also of the equipment it is driving).

For example motor coupled to a pump - need to check with both motor manufacturer and the pump manufacturer that the equipment is rated to operate at increased speed.

GA from Anthony.

To add a little, the torque-versus-speed characteristic of the load is crucial, along with the voltage-versus-frequency characteristic of the drive.

To ajw...: just out of curiosity, are you associated with a winemaking entity that would be known around the world? (I once worked for the craziest genius winemaker from the Red Mountain region of Washington State, USA.)

Unfortunately not. Was in the game for about 10 years. But in the world of commercial winemaking, it is not the romantic world it is made out to be. More refinery than winery. Eventually I'll retire and make wine on the small scale - but until then it is water treatment (RO EDI/EDR, etc).

Who did you work for?

Michael Taylor Moore, of Blackwood Canyon Vintners, near Benton City, WA, USA. He studied at UC Davis, apprenticed for a time in France, and brought back some time-honored techniques, pretty much small to medium scale hand-crafted. He produced some knockout wines. This is in an arid area where irrigation is available, but he didn't plump up his grapes with lots of water; rather he went for smaller but more concentrated fruit. His vineyard sometimes looked like crap, and was a small producer, but with intensely concentrated flavors, and wines that aged well.

Yes u can. but the motor will take high amps beyond rated amps if u increase Voltage or frequency. but when freq increses, u should also increase the voltage to maintain the V/F a constant. but, it is not adviceable to run motor continuously with 60hz. If u run ur motor beyond the rated frequency. definitely it will affect the motor.
