Switchyard Gravel

substation switchyards surface is often covered with small sized stones (mostly gravel type ).what is the technical reason for it ?

In addition, it also helps retarding the evaporation of moisture from the topsoil layer underneath the gravel during dry weather condition. This eventually helps to maintain better grounding resistance (low ground resistance).

Refer to section 7.4 and 12.5 of IEEE 80.

Snakes will make shot circuit in the switch yard. As snakes are not able to move on the small stones so gravel(small stones) is provided. This is also one of the reason.
