In the context of electrical equipment, it usually means Gas Insulated Switchgear (or sometimes just a Gas Insulated Switch). it is used in high voltage transmission, usually by power utilities. The gas is usually sulfur hexafluoride or SF6, an inert non-flamable gas that has better dielectric properties than air. GIS became popular when Oil Insulated Switches were rendered obsolete because the oil contained PCBs. GIS can also be used to describe a Gas Insulation System, as used in the above but also as a float on top of molten magnesium to keep air away from it.

GIS also means other things such as Geographical Information Systems or the Green Iguana Society (there really is such a thing), but we can't read your mind to know the context of your question.

GIs = doughboys = U.S. soldiers (morphed from the abbreviation for Government or General Issue).

It looks like an undefined abbreviation.
