ELCB for Overcurrent & Shortcircuit Protection

12/29/2011 1:10 AM

will 32/40 Amp. ELCB installed in incommer of MCB WILL TAKE CARE FOR over current & short circuit protection , (for domestic installation we need only 9KA RATING) or we need to use MCB sepratly.

Are you sure? ELCB installed in INCOMER of MCB or incomer of DB? If you already have an MCB as incomer and add this ELCB to the MCB then the combination is called ELMCB offering Overcurrent + Short Circuiot + Earth Leakage Protection. Else, if you are planning to use ONLY the ELCB as the incomer of the DB, then you will NOT have any over current or short circuit protection. Plain ELCBs do not provide any protection against over current and/or shor circuit. They provide protection against earth leakage only. ELCBs do not have a short circuit breaking capacity, The 9kA you are talking of is the breaking capacity of the MCB.It is strongly suggested to use an MCB of adequate current rating and adequate breaking capacity ahead of the ELCB in the DB.

The common usage of the term ELCB does not include overcurrent and short circuit protection. However, you should check the specifics of the particular ELCB you are using, because it might integrate all of these functions. Ask the manufacturer, rather than relying on a generic answer.

Rather than an ELCB, choose a suitable RCBO instead.

As the original abbreviation isn't defined, neither is that in this response.
