Onan RS12000 Fault Code "32" Issue

12/29/2011 12:15 PM

My unit is 7 years old, has 2700 hrs of operation, sports the Honda 670 motor, uses LP, operates at 8600' elevation, backs up a 2200-watt off-the-grid solar panel, 24-volt battery system. I have experienced various problems over the years and unfortunately, my dealer has refused to service my unit since 2006.

My current issue is a "Service Fault", fault code 32 - "Low Cranking Speed Sense". All fixes suggested by the manual (i.e., clean and check battery connections, recharge or replace battery and/or change oil to recommended viscocity) have not corrected the fault indicator. The generator fires up within 2 seconds and shuts down after 2 more seconds followed by the service fault indicator (3 flashes).

Does anyone have any other suggested fixes? Is there a way to dissable or bypass the sensor? I'm sure the Controller Board is malfunctioning in some way or sensing an incorrect fault which results in shutting down my unit.

Thank you in advance,

DS

Get another dealer?

Onan is a good and reputable company. I'd call them directly and complain about the dealer while asking for help diagnosing the problem since their 'dealer' is not helping.

Good advice, thank you.

I had given up on the Onan dealer due to their high cost of servicing my unit. After considering your advice, I did call my local Onan Cummins service department and the manager which I spoke with was an expert at troubleshooting my particular model. Over the phone, he isolated the problem to the generator's slip rings and brushes. Upon cleaning them, the unit fired right up and in running normally again. He also emailed me the service manual which is extremely useful.

That is a really sweet outcome.
