Tube Material Impact On Selection Of Baffle Material

12/29/2011 10:59 AM

Hi,

My query is that is there any impact on baffle material selection with tube material in Heat Exchanger? Like in my case, shell is of CS, tubes are of Duplex 2205 and recommended baffle material in 304L.

Other then galvanic reaction, tube material do not contribute in selection of baffle plate materials. It is the shell side fluid which guides selection of baffle plates. However it is always good to have SS baffle plates with SS or higher grade tubes. Practically it has been observed in many exchanger where CS baffle plates got damaged due corrosion/erosion but SS tubes were in good condition so the performance of heat exchanger become poor due to damged baffle plates.

Also the design of the baffle and how its secured can play a role.

It does rather depend on the wetting fluid, its temperature and pressure, none of which has been stated.
