Reverse Power on Diesel Engine - 415/240Vac

01/09/2012 9:56 PM

A diesel engine (running alone) trips on "Reverse Power" after loading. The engine runs perfectly on no-load, and once we apply load on the engine, its runs for a short time and then trips on reverse power. Please help me with this.

Please also note that the system is a low voltage system..i.e.. 415/240Vac.

Thank You

One possibility is a fuel delivery problem to this genset. At light loads, it can remain synchronized with the remainder of the system. But at heavy loads, if the fuel input is insufficent, this genset will slow down and absorb reverse power.

Reverse Power trip could be related to speed of machine, the first place I would start looking is the governor.. you should be seeing negative watts..

Is the governor linkage free and well lubricated?

Is the actuator for governor full of hydraulic fluid?

Is there a shutdown solenoid that is malfunctioning causing the fuel rack to be restricted?

I have informed the mechanics to have a look at the fuel system plus the governor. The power house is located on one of the outer island, we'll see what the outcome.

Thank you very much for your assistance.

Amusing! How can a DG set running "alone" trip on reverse power?

I think that's the OP's point. How?

The OP's observation is an uncommanded shutdown accompanied by a reverse power indication.

Other respondents have tasked the OP with some further trouble shooting. Let's see what he comes back with.

Check the reverse power relay wiring with respect to the drawing

I would check the polarity connections for the instrument current transformer. If the current transformer is connected incorrectly the generator will continue to produce power until the time trips on reverse.

CT's also must be assembled on the rigth direction, since current is a vector, if it is assembled reversed it will indicate negative, or reverse current.

Hi Sekopati, I do not completely understand what you mean when you say "Reverse Power". My understanding of Reverse Power is "Phase Reversal" this meaning that the Phases are not in the correct rotation. If this is what you mean by Reverse Power, then first I would check the control circuit to the phase reversal relay, is this a new generator or an existing generator, if it is existing the problem may be caused by a faulty phase reversal relay

Best Regards

Joe

Diesel alternator set running alone should not trip on Reverse Power relay activation.

Check all reverse power relay wiring and associated CT connections, or the RPR is kaput.

I fail to understand what is the need for reverse power relay for a low voltage generator stand alone running system.Could anybody enlighten please

Thanks in advance

Check the drawings and then disconnect/bypass/short whatever is giving the trip signal, it's not needed, there's nowhere for the power to come from while it is running alone, so the fault is in the relay, contacts, CTs, whatever is sensing that power is going towards driving the engine.

reverse power mean power is getting reverse check the changeover panel where the load is distributed. when DG is loaded RPM is dropping check fuel system. Basic problem filter choke replace and check it.

reverse power is couse in heavy eletrical load pls do this for me

1) donnot start your generator with the distribution panel circuit are in all on position turn off all circuit on the panel board,

2) start your genset and wait 5min to warm up ,

3) then after 5min switch one by one of your circuit breaker with a gap of 1min. untill in full load

4) then if the genset is still the same and tripping you need to calculate your facilities full total load then EX. if yout total load full is 100kw and your genset is 125kw at full operation you need to replace your genset a new one @ 300kw at full load or if dont want and you need that try this buy 2unit step up transformer @ 415acv @ 10kv output the second TR input is 10kv @ 3phase 415 acv, i hope this will help you but see it ur self much the price if you buy new gen set or to add TR on your old genset
