Minimum Length Supporting Legs Sleeves for Floating Roof

01/13/2012 7:05 AM

First of all, I want to introduce myself into the forum.

I hope to enjoy and learn a lot with the posts related to The Storage Tanks and Spheres world.

I am trying to found the minimun length for the sleeve of the supporting legs (removible legs) of one floating roof (single pontoon type).

All my life, I used the common measures (due to in API 650 Apendix C, I have never read something about it), but it is the first time a purchaser has required it, so I appreciate so much if you can help me.

Thanks in advance.

Best regards

Luis

A drawing might help. In particular, it would be interesting to see if any small tilt in the roof structure could result in the legs becoming "cocked" in the sleeves, thereby jamming the lifting/lowering process.

Thanks!

The leg sleeves need to be long enough to satisfy their structural function.

If the below deck space is limited then the sleeves can extend above the roof to provide adequate lateral support and accommodate the locking mechanism for the legs.

The purchaser may be concerned about the below deck clearance to the tank floor when the roof has settled without the service legs being lowered and locked off, ie a fixed stop clearance that will be there even without the legs where the sleeves' below deck lengths act as fixed stops.

The below deck space can be quite busy with roof drainage and fire service elements that may not tolerate being pinched by the roof.

This might be why the purchaser needs to know. Have you asked them why they need to know yet? They obviously have a concern. Once bitten perhaps.....

Thanks a lot wal.

All you have explained was what I told to my customer.

I haven´'t had ever any problem with the design of the sleeves, giving them as length as they need to work properly.

The problem is that they have one old tank with a very short length for the sleevs and the crude oil is flowing through the space between the leg and the sleeve (somenthing very common, but with 700-800 mm of length the crude only can reach half of the distance).

The customer asked me if any code fix the length for the sleeves.

Thanks again and best regards.
