Involuntary Physics Lesson/How I Spent My Saturday

01/14/2012 4:25 PM

Although this is personal, I thought I'd share this with you; you can all use a good laugh at my expense. This is what happens when you get cocky and think you are a good driver. This was today, at Phoenix Int. Raceway. I had passed everybody on the track and was really cookin' when I came out of turn 4 too hot and crashed into the wall at about 120 MPH. Fortunately, insurance will pay for most of the repairs, but the Christmas present from my wife suddenly became a LOT more expensive. The blue paint is from the wall. Took out the entire right side and the rear end. OUCH.

Now I are a real racecar driver! Take your best shot!

They do if you pay to drive them. Thank God I had it, it's optional. This was just my third time to drive at PIR.

It was a lot of fun. These are retired NASCAR racecars.

'Involuntary Physics Lesson'. Ha! Great title.

Glad you were able to walk away. (Unharmed? I assume; nothing broken?).

What about that wall? /Will it ever be the same?

That black mark on the blue wall is all mine. Only one on the whole track. Got to ride in the ambulance, too. I'll be sore tomorrow, but OK.

Were they pissed? The guys who had to fix it were, front suspension damage. The money people weren't.

Will they let you drive again? Yes.

Would you do it again? In a heartbeat! Probably will. It's a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Think about it. How many people can say they drove a race car into a wall?

Wow, glad you are okay!

That is the thing about physics lessons. There is no trial, jury, or appeal phase to the process, you go directly to the penalty phase.

To finish first, you have to first finish.

There are no old bold drivers...(some idiot told me that 30 odd years ago, and I am determined to prove them wrong)

Good effort, and demonstrates the effectiveness of "Safety Engineering".

I hope the bumps and bruises won't cause you too much grief. Maybe next time you can convince someone to take a video of your efforts for posterity..

There's an in-car video. They took it to "analyze" after the wreck. I'll get it sometime, they said. I'll post it, or a link.

Glad your only bruised. But I understand why you would do it again.

My wife bought me 5 laps to the "Richard Petty Racing Experience" in Las Vegas last year for my birthday. Scary as hell, and the most fun I have ever had with my clothes on!

That wall comes up real quick coming out of the curve.

Hope you heal up soon.

Now that you hit the wall at 120 what do you think of those guys that wizz by at 200 or so every week? I'd love to do what you did except for the wall part. But, I really admire those pros that do it inches from each other every weekend. What do you think?

They want you to have some incentive to not wreck the cars. So, the insurance doesn't cover the first $1,000.00 in damages. But, I knew that when I climbed into the car. I flattened the entire side of the car and bent the rear deck, and I didn't find out how much damage I did to the steering/suspension.

First of all..............is this homework? Sounds like it to me.

Secondly, it appears you've picked up another OT ghost.

I'm wondering if there shouldn't be a section dedicated to sneaky SOB's at the end of every month.

This months award goes to.................................Yep, posted anonymously and threw out OT bombs. Now that would be fun!!!

Glad you're OK.

I've always wondered about how they handle accidents at these driving schools. You couldn't be the first or the last person to wreck one of these cars.

So they charge you extra for the insurance plus you still have a 1k deductible. The trip to the hospital is standard procedure after any race car wreck. So how was the medical insurance handled? Through them or your own insurance?

Will you get the final results after the investigation. Who knows maybe it was mechanical failure instead of driver error.

Re: Involuntary Physics Lesson/How I Spent My Saturday

Just rode in the ambulance from on the track back to the infield. They had checked me over and done vitals and decided I wasn't hurt so I didn't go to the hospital.

The medical would have been my responsibility.

I have no idea if I will get any type of analysis. The only possible failure there could have been was if the right front tire blew, which I wouldn't have been able to hear anyway.

They charge extra for insurance and the video.

I think knowing you're still going to pay the first $1K if you wreck makes everyone more cautious. Well, most people anyway.

Having rolled a car I can still remember every bit of it 20 years on. Walked away with not a scratch, the gods must have smiled on me that day.

Just good to know your OK! Other than battered pride and wallet.

It's interesting that my left ankle took such a hit. It couldn't have been more than an inch or two from the clutch pedal when I hit the wall, but it feels like somebody hit it with a golf club.

It is great that you are around to post and greater that you make light of a potentially fatal incident.. I am glad that the only vehicle I ever owned and drove was a second hand Humber bicycle at a top speed of 12 MPH.

Well ya gotta crash, cos if you didn't you'd only be fretting that you could maybe have gone just a little bit quicker.
It's good to push ourselves...

Re: Involuntary Physics Lesson/How I Spent My Saturday

I didn't have time to reflect, as I was now heading for the inside wall with great haste.

My only regret (in addition to the money) was the fact that I wasn't going to get to complete the last 5 laps.

And, although I would/will never wreck a car on purpose, I still smile when I remember doing it. It was a truly unique experience, although I'm still sore and bruised.

Cheers.
