Thanks! That's a new one on me; I'm familiar only with about four species of middle to northern Pacific crabs, and Atlantic blues. This one seems roughly comparable to king crab. Quite impressive!

Not surprising a trawler-man wouldn't as it's tropical and can drown.

I imagine you have researched it by now but for those who haven't.

Their diet may interest some unaware of what 'regular' crustaceans eat.

Eating them is also 'interesting'.

Yes, I did look into that article. Those guys are amazing--60 year life span.

The Bering Sea crab fishery uses industrial-sized pots (7' x 7' x 3' or larger, ~700 lb empty) rather than trawl nets. TV's "The Deadliest Catch" showed this quite well. Most of the Bering Sea king crab these days are not as large as the coconut crabs, but some years ago they were sometimes just as big, with leg spans of 5' or more.

Hi NSS,

From pics I have seen (only pics ), I am not sure this is a real coconut crab ... notice in the photo it is hanging from a plastic trash bin. Just my guess, but such weight would cause this can to tip, even it if were full.

I looked at some photos online, and these things can be huge ... truly, I can't imagine just 'stumbling across' one of these ... it would scare the crap out of me, for sure. I can only hope they are SLOW

They are very slow and docile. Children find them climbing trees and just pop them off and watch them thump to the ground. I guess if you grow up around them they aren't very scary.
