AC Motor Testing- Meter Showing Fluctuating Current

In our test bed for testing ac motors of LT Range, we observe analog ammeter and correspondingly wattmeters- showing fluctualing and oscilating current, instead of steady current. Request your kind solutions for this phenomenon.

The test bed consists of a DC Motor driven alternator; which gives the ac supply required for the test motor. The ac motor is coupled to a dc generator. The DC generator and DC Motor are paralleled; and subsequent to which the load on the ac motor is adjusted by controlling the excitation of the DC Generator.

It appears that the fluctuating current the analog meter showing is due to low frequency current in the stator of the ac motor; superimposed on the fundamental current, showing fluctuating current.

Which machine in the above set up can result in this problem?

Just add a huge f-off-sized lump of weight to the ammeter needle.

How is the field of the DC load generator controlled?

Out of interest has this system worked OK in the past?

If the DC load generator and the DC motor are paralleled how does the system start?

It sounds like you need to isolate the problem some more.

Perhaps you can substitute some large resistors for the test motor to see if the source is stable. Perhaps some axis if off center. This would be a mechanically induced instability. Sometimes you have to test the test!
