Electricity Sector in India

02/07/2012 5:58 AM

The electricity sector in India had an installed capacity of 185.5 Gigawatt (GW) as of November 2011, the world's fifth largest .In December 2011, over 300 million Indian citizens had no access to electricity .Over one third of India's rural population lacked electricity, as did 6% of the urban population. Of those who did have access to electricity in India, the supply was intermittent and unreliable.

India currently suffers from a major shortage of electricity generation capacity, even though it is the world's fourth largest energy consumer after United States, China and Russia. The International Energy Agency estimates India needs an investment of at least $135 billion to provide universal access of electricity to its population.

Electricity distribution network in India is inefficient compared to other networks in the world. India's network losses exceeded 32% in 2010, compared to world average of less than 15%.Loss reduction technologies, if adopted in India, can add about 30 GW of electrical power, while simultaneously reducing electricity cost and carbon footprint pollution per MWHr used.

Nothing can be done when people oppose New Power Plant.

Poor and Inefficient Management.

Politician can give even give free electricity for there political favor to win elections.

Till recent times a figure of 50,000 MW was a popular estimate of power shortfall. Peak deficit in terms of Units (kWh) was in the range of 12%. Interestingly a study by BEE revealed that nearly 25,000 MW capacity could be avoided through Energy Efficiency and Energy Conservation alone. Which means solution to wipe out 50% of power problem without any additional capacity installation! Moreover out of the installed capacity a majority of coal based power plants are towards the fag end of their life and running much below their designed efficiency. Newer plants face an issue with coal supply linkage.

There are various States (including Gujarat) which have reported much lower than National average of ATC (aka T&D) Losses.

In the scenario of higher ATC Losses State Government should encourage the use of renewable energy for power generation based on the Geographical significance. For instance T.N. has effectively realized its wind energy potential. M.P. has lots of agricultural activity happening and hence can focus on Biomass. Rajasthan is attempting to utilize its Solar Energy potential etc. Decentralized power systems would definitely be a boon to the power problem.

One source of renewable energy which can be generally useful across the Country is Solar Energy. PV Solar offers an excellent solution for power problem at various levels (Individual / Community / Utility).

In fact the power problem and solution is something on which I can go on and on and on. :-)

Reduce strength of armed forces and defence spendings, suspend space programmes, ban caste system, punish caste based violence, stop inteference in politics of neighbours and invest that money to provide water and electricity to countrymen.

GA... you only forgot to mention that the Indian Government needs to buy access to the technology to solve the problems, rather than relying on poor replications of copied technology.

As pointed out in earlier thread, the deficit could have been managed effectively by cutting transmission loss, stopping power theft, free power supply by politicians to garner votes which is highly misused by many users, inefficiency in generation and distribution. Above all, the State Electricity Boards are considered one of the most corrupt and inefficient among all public sector units.

An environmental solution can be found at Emerald Eco City go to the bottom section on energy. As your population grows and the supply of energy diminishes you will need it.
