Google's Homage to Dickens's Bicentennial

02/07/2012 7:24 AM

Again, Google have created appropriate and lovely artwork for a celebration. Click on the depiction of Victorian England...and find a list of free Google ebooks - all of Dickens's classics of course!

Old 60's joke.
Do you like Dickens?
Can't say I've ever been to one.

You don't know what you're missing! It's very like nadgering, of course, but without the cordwangle and you don't need a ganderbag.

[nice to see you BTW :o)]

Sounds delightful! Not sure I'd need the ganderbag anyway, as I had that taken care of at an out-patient clinic a number of years ago.

I'm planning to be in the UK later this summer (after the Olympics), so maybe I can find a good place to try Kipling and nadgering when I'm there.

Well, I know I've never Thrubwelled.

I'll have to stop there at least to get a photo of a sign with the village name on it.

Still just in the planning stages, but I'll land at Holyhead via ferry from Dublin. Then rent a car to tour a bit of Wales, the Midlands (Stonehenge, of course) maybe up to Stratford-Upon-Avon, eventually to London and back to the US. Looks like Nempnett Thrubwell would fit into the plans I've got so far. I'd like to see parts of Scotland too, but not sure I'll have the time.

You'll spend a long time if you are looking for Stonehenge in the Midlands.

If I'd been caught doing Chi Ting when I was a young 'un, I'd have gotten the black belt when I got home from school.

We (in Scotland, late 60's) got the Brown Belt[1] while at school, just for being suspected of backchatting the teacher.

Don't forget Anglesey's more interesting little places. A visit to Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantisiliogogogoch must be on the cards, surely, before leaving Wales? Don't rush it - a week in North Wales isn't enough, really.

Oh, what about Six Mile Bottom on the next orbit, perhaps?

I'll add those places to my list of potential spots to visit. So many places, so little time.

My mother was born in Pennsylvania near a town call Six Mile Run.

You have got to get a picture of New York's hamlet sign

Give us a shout and I'll stand you a pint :o)

Oh...Stonehenge isn't in the Midlands...it's too far south for that. Midlands is a north-south thing, not an east-west thing over here ;o). Wiltshire just about qualifies for South-West status. You'll be wanting to "do" Stratford-upon-Avon* before Stonehenge. Local tip - nip in to see Woodhenge too....about 15 minutes east of Stonehenge. You can also drive past Silbury Hill and at least one white horse on your way to London.

The oldest yew tree (5000 yo they say) is in a small village on north coast of Wales, not far from Anglesey / Menaii Straights, if you like that sort of thing (I do - my wallpaper is a pic of that very tree!).

*If you want to see a play - book in advance (can be done online...no quills needed)

PM me if you want more tips or have questions.

Okay. I might have to skip Stratford-upon-Avon. Maybe add Jane Austen's Hampshire instead.
