Thermalite Socks

02/07/2012 5:58 PM

I went to my local hardware dealer on Sunday, to buy a replacement 58W 1500mm fluorescent tube for my kitchen light fitting. While passing through the checkout, I noticed some pairs of Thermalite socks - £5.99/pr.

My feet were very cold, so I bought a pair. I have tried them tonight, but they don't seem to be as warm as expected - can anyone suggest a reliable remedy? Someone told me that they needed a "starter" - is this the way forward?

I think you may be getting confused - Thermite is a very different substance, and will do a lot more than warm your feet. Try Google.

I think they are used as liners under wool socks...Maybe some heat holders...

My recommendation is to work your feet into the warm beach sand as quickly as possible...

I always find a tot of whisky a good cold starter.

Enough of it and I don't give a damn anymore.

Stick your feet in ice water for a while. If your overall circulation is not completely out of tilt (shot) they should be and stay nice and warm, after the pain eases.

Ahhhhhh should be the sound coming from you. If not, see your doctor .

Thermalite socks - £5.99/pr.

When my feet get cold I like to spend about ten minutes soaking in a 104 degree F hot tub, that usually makes me feel cozy for the rest of the day.

They are sock liners. I use sock liners as my feet sweat a lot. Sock liners help to keep them dry. Wicks the moisture to the outer sock. Which I wear is usually wool or a cotton polyester blend. Most these sock lines are polyester to begin with.

JD, are you looking for a material that is thermally insulating, waterproof, or both?

Both would be nice - with my current condition, my feet are swollen so that I can only wear my old, cracked trainers (not waterproof).

Is that a photo of a sock testing facility?

Re: Thermalite Socks

02/08/2012 2:14 PM

They seem horribly expensive - perhaps consider this DYI alternative?

First. buy several pairs of cotton socks.

Second. The socks must then be thoroughly boiled in a solution of potash or of soda, in order to remove all greasy substances which the cotton may contain, and after thus boiled it may be exposed to the sun, or wind, or in a heated room, to dry.

Third. The socks must now be taken into a room heated to 100 Fahr. in order to make them perfectly dry.

Fourth. A mixture is now made containing 1 part weight of nitric acid of 1.48 to 1.50 specific gravity, and 3 parts weight of common sulphuric acid. This mixture must stand in closed earthen or glass jars for several days, or until the two acids become fully mixed and cooled.

Fifth. This mixture of acids is now put into an apparatus containing three apartments; one for the main bulk of the acids, one for the immersion of the socks, and one for receiving the socks after being immersed. This apparatus may be made of cast-iron

Sixth. The socks are now taken and dipped in the acid bath, in said apparatus, in such a manner that every 3 oz. of socks must come in contact with 60 lbs. of the mixture of acids, or in other words, the bath must contain fully 60 lbs. of the mixture while parcels of 3 oz. of socks are being dipped. The parcels thus dipped must be gently pressed, and the acids allowed to flow back into the acid-bath, and the parcels are then put into the third apartment of the apparatus, where for every 1 lb. of socks there must be 10 1/2 lbs. of the said mixture of the acids. The socks must remain in this state subject to the action of the acids for 48 hours, and the mixture must always have an equally strong concentration, and must be kept under a uniform temperature by a cooling process.

Seventh. The socks are now taken out from the acids and pressed, and then put into a centrifugal machine to remove all surplus acids.

Eighth. The socks are again put into another centrifugal machine, into which a constant stream of fresh water is admitted. This process is intended to remove the last particles of adherent acids.

Ninth. The socks are now taken and put into a flume or trough, and scoured in such a manner that a running stream of fresh water may pass through and over them; and the same must remain in this situation for at least 14 days. To lessen the time for this operation the socks and operator may be immersed or saturated in alcohol for the space of 24 hours. This process is also intended to extract all and the last particles of acids that may possibly adhere to either.

Tenth. The socks are now taken from the stream of water, or if from the alcohol they must be washed, and then boiled in a solution of common soap and again dried. This process is intended to restore the socks to their original softness and appearance.

Eleventh. The socks are now taken and immersed in a solution of water-glass of 1 lb. to 2 lbs. of soft water which must be 1.09 specific gravity of concentration. To 1 lb. of socks 198-1000ths of a lb. of this solution of 46 Beaume is required. The socks are then taken out of this solution and exposed to the action of the atmosphere for at least 4 days. This process has the tendency to preserve the material, and also to make its explosive warming qualities less rapid.

Admittedly it takes a while, but hey, fills out the day, keeps you off the streets

I'm confused...do you put the socks on before immersing in acid, or after?

Agreed, either way would solve the problem at hand...

Re: Soluble Potatoes

02/08/2012 7:22 PM

Wow! How can I thank you for these wonderful revelations? I shall return my socks to the dealer (worn only once, and I still have the receipt) so that I can put the money towards the purchase of the ingredients for your suggested recipe.

I have only one question, regarding the solubility of potatoes. My earlier experiments in this direction have only resulted in a suspension, or at best, a colloid. Am I doing something wrong?

One further question (oops that makes two ) - would Jetex fuse be suitable for pre-warming the socks once I try wearing them? I still have a considerable stock of fuse in my drawers, and have been waiting for some years to find a worthwhile use.

With thanks in anticipation,

JohnDG.

PS, Do you have any good tips regarding the repair of hairline cracks in ceramic glaze?

I seem to recall reading that they are on the cusp of a breakthrough in developing a non-surgical cure for colloids.

If you can just hang on for a few more years, your feet may be saved.

Re: Soluble Potatoes

Yes - you need to remove the cellulose first. This is the simple enthalpy reversal of photosynthesis. I.e it was CO2 and water (6 of each and light energy made the glucose/cellulose) so it's just a matter of separating out the CO2.

Or as I have done, recover the carbon itself by cutting the potato into 10 x 10 mm cross section stick shapes along the longest potato dimension, blanching them for a minute or 2 in boiling water (surface starch reduction) then drying and placing them in heated oil (160-180 0C) then having a telemarketer ring.

As for the fuse question - I like these better than the boring Jetex ones.

(that's odd, I was sure I was subscribed to that one )

I'm waiting for four more feet but my eyesight isn't what it once was so it might be there and I just can't focus on the knob.

Good to see you here though, 3 - 4 ahead of yourself Seems the Kris/Del time machine was worth the $27 million retro gold bars after all.

Did you notice I scored the 1st OBO bestowed "OT ultimate complement" for that cotton one?

ay

I once stripped away some cladding, hoping to find four nice feet but, alas, they were just plain vanilla. Bit like the two with hairy legs that somebody posted recently.....found 'em. Hidden in an OT post which has a lovely ending to the first paragraph.

A Quote from Admin "The CR4 team has decided that it's time to close the Bath Breaking Technique thread. Why?"

Because it can't be stopped anywhere else either and in any way.

We have the same procedure done here after prolonged rain. We grow webbing between tows and fingers and they have this painless way of removing them. Sitting in a bath for hours makes them nice and soft.

Ah, the socks thing. Wearing socks here is like wearing sunnies in a nightclub.

Cold feet? Is that a dish of some kind? Ahhhhhhhh
