Mobile Electrical Equipment Room Standards?

04/02/2012 10:26 AM

Hi all,

I am currently in my last year of my Electrical / Electronics degree. I am designing a Mobile Electrical Equipment Room (EER) for my thesis. This room will be part of a Mobile Power Unit i.e the main power generation will be a gas turbine generator (20MW) mounted on one trailer, the balance of plant on another trailer and my EER mounted on another trailer.

The EER will contains the Step down house transformer (750KVA), Neutral Ground Resistor, Main Breakers, MCC Panels, PLC, UPS system, Fire Protection System and control panel HMI.

I pretty much have the design finished but I am having trouble trying to find the relevant standards a mobile EER must comply with. This EER is intended to operate anywhere in the world.

Can anyone please advise me on what standards are necessary for this mobile EER to be 100% internationally complient?

Thanks!

To fit the spec the concept will need to be compliant with all nations':

  • Wiring regulations
  • Fire protection regulations
  • Noise regulations
  • Environmental protection regulations
  • Import/export regulations
  • Waste disposal regulations
  • Clean air regulations
  • Health & Safety regulations
  • Etc., etc.

It would need to remain provably functional in all nations' ambient temperatures, which might range from, oh, say +45degC or more in the Gulf states' summers to -80degC in an Antarctic winter. It would need to remain operational during a 12h day to 12h night environment at the equator to a 24h day and a 24h night inside the polar circles. It would need to remain functional from the near-sea-level climate in The Netherlands to the Alti Plano of Bolivia. It would need to remain functional in both tropical monsoons and the arid plateau of the Gobi desert. Etc., etc.

It's a tall ask...

Hi PWSlack,

Thanks for the response. I know I could be opening up a can of worms for myself with this, but is there a single international body for each discipline that has standards that will cover all the relevant national standards....

for eg. do the International Electrotechnical Commissioning (IEC) standards cover the NEC, CENELEC etc etc.

Hi,

I think it is fairly safe to assume that there is no standard that covers the world.

If there was, motor manufacturers would not make cars to different "type" standards.

I think the main problem is if you make the machine to "Rolls Royce" standards, it would be difficult to sell it in the not so well off countries of the world.

Design it to your countries standards and then expect to modify it, for sale in other parts of the world.

Best of luck,

John

John,

That is probably the best way to approach it alright.

Is anyone even aware of any standard that applies to "mobile" switching rooms / trailers??
