Charging Method of a Flooded Lead Acid Battery

Hi,

I have a UPS in which charging system is consist of a transformer which out put is center taped then two diodes (not SCRs)are connected (for full wave rectification) which output is connected with 12V-160AH battery terminals. During charging when battery voltage is almost 11.2V (after usage), system switches power to primary of transformer and charging starts from 12A. As battery voltage increases, charging current gradually decreases at 8A then 6A then 4A and when battery voltage rises up to 14.2V, charging disconnects. I want to ask if this charging method is ok or not?

I have less experience about UPS and batteries and I need help of participant to understand some concepts.

It's fairly normal and many do it.

I don't like it as it shortens total battery life by as much as 50%.

If you don't need a full charge, set it to stop charging at around 13.2 to 13.4 volts, the battery will last a lot longer.....
