That's it. Based on your own life and experiences...................what is an engineer?

An engineer is simply a mathematician, physicist or philosopher who was totally unable to escape the real world.

What is an engineer?

Anyone or anything, including insects and other live forms, which can accumulate molecules and lump them in a way that makes sense to the next generation of survivors of the experiment.

If you replace the molecules with worded ideas you become a politician, the most challenging engineering department of them all. You did include the social engineering in your question?

Gosh you must be reading this early in the morning so I hope you had a good night.

The next one's on me, Ky.

I always thought of them as the world's first chopper pilots! They're amazing to watch close-up through the window...

Re: What Is An Engineer?

Not only the flying part but the nest building. Very, very clever and not only constructing it but placing it strategically. That's what I meant with other life forms.

If an engineer keeps his eyes closed on what is happening in nature and only relies on books, maths and laws the creative part is amputated.

Even in the early days: 'were there was pain there was gain' and development from there. Most people wouldn't call Charles Darwin an engineer but if you think about it, he was one of the most prolific re-discoverers of all time. He found parts and put them together. Not that they were not there before, he just started making a rhyme of it and engineered a theory.

Making something from nothing would be the none plus ultra of any engineer. Not calling God an engineer here, he'd be to busy doing the important stuff

Were is admin when you need them?

What a machine, Ky.

Re: What Is An Engineer?

I figured I'd chime in a little later.

I'm not even an official engineer, although I seem to fit in here.

I can't stand looking at something, and not knowing how it works.

While I'm not particularly trained in mathematical formulas, I also show a lack of interest in things that are already known..........................I want to find out about the stuff that we don't know.

It'll never earn me a decent living...........................but it is what it is.

I'll never understand people.

I must have been typing that while you were typing this:

I want to find out about the stuff that we don't know.

Do not amputate, yet.

When it comes to understanding people may I join the club?

Sure, you can join, but I think that understanding people is a fruitless effort.

I've said before that engineering types are born and not made. Lots of common traits, like taking things apart, being some of the earliest memories.

An engineer is the dumb idiot who does a job then worries that if anything does wrong only he will be caught and held responsible.

An Engineer was sent to hell and Satan received him with the gates of hell all broken. He fixed it. Then as he went into hell it was too HOT so he fixed the Air Conditioning plants. Then the fridge....the deep freezer....the showers.....the water cooler and on...and on. God came to know about it and it that in hell everybody is having a whale of a time! HE called satan and said "send me the engineer to heaven else I'll sue you!!!!"

Satan said, "no way. Ha ha where will you find a lawyer to sue me.

Thats what an engineer is.

An engineer is the person who looks up from the guillotine and tells the executioner "it's stuck because the trip-lever needs to be oiled, and by the way I just happen to have some in my shirt pocket protector..."

I've always maintained that an engineer is an industrial prostitute.

At times, I've felt like that too!
