Can Glass Be Cut After Tempering?

06/11/2012 8:37 AM

Hi there: I have a tempered glass (not laminated) door in my office that needs to be shortened as the carpet will be replaced by solid wood flooring. A new glass door will be ordered this week... unless I can shorten it by 2 cm. I understand that it can crack if cut with a disk that generates heat.... but what about the water-cooled disks used for cutting marbles? has anyone one of you already broken a door this way?

You'd have to anneal it first, as far as I know.

"has anyone one of you already broken a door this way?"

Yeah just about everyone that has tried. Order the new door. All work on tempered glass is done before the tempering process. You maybe able to find a glass shop that can anneal the glass then cut it. Then re-temper it.

Yes, you feel such an idiot standing there with the handle in your hand an a pile of glass fragments at your feet,I mean what do you do with the handle? I just hung it on the hinge and carried on walking whilst whistling, "If I can help somebody then my effort will not be in vain".

I don't quite understand...

Does this glass door not have a wooden or metal surround? That is to say, isn't it a wood door with a great big piece of glass? Is this door on hinges? If yes, this is almost dertainly what it is. You may be able to trim the bottom.

There are doors manufactured of all glass but they are uncommon. These are usually 15mm or thicker. Is this door on floor pivots? If yes, it is most likely an all-glass door that cannot be trimmed.

Hi Doorman,

it is actually a single piece of glass fixed to pivots, no frame around it. Seems to me that we will have to throw it away and get a new one.

Anything can be cut. It just depends on what tools are used and how much you want to spend. It might cost more to modify the door than to replace it.

Tempered glass is made by forcing internal stresses in a piece of glass that has already been cut, etched, and polished before it is tempered.

While this makes it much stronger in some respects, it also makes it more vulnerable to shatter by introducing small defects. Even if you use a water cooled glass saw (diamond encrusted metal blade) you would run a risk of introducing enough of an imperfection that would crack the glass at a later time. That is to say that while you may be able to finish the cut, it will still be prone to fracture at any time.

Heat is not the issue. Small imperfections like a scratch is all it takes. Since it is already loaded with stress it would be like trying to drill a hole in an inflated balloon without popping it.

That was my thought... raise the bridge, rather than lower the river. A new door would only be needed, if the installation was up against a steel ibeam header, without any gap.

Generally, doors are shimmed in at the top and sides, and allowances built-in for minor imperfections.

European Style Stiles are not so forgiving. We look for thin lines, eliminating fudge factor, and because these are offset pivot type arrangements, re-handing the door is not a DIY job.

If installation is trimmed-in, as is done in malls, there may be mirror to remove and other details to deal with.

I get called from people, just AFTER they spend 3-6K per door, not happy they have to get on all fours to lock and unlock their office or storefront.

Solutions exist, but they put the lock at normal height, and thus ruin their EuroCentric aesthetics.

That's neat. Maybe he should have a door painted on the underside of the glass? With a window in it?

As another noted, it can not be done. The only solution would be to move the hinges up by 2 CM, which would require cutting into the framing at the top of the door - which might not be doable?

Not a good idea to cut a tempered glass. Tempared glass is developed during the days of automotive glass to provide higher strength than normal glass by heating and rapid cooling of a finished glass which is free of defect.

Glass is then protected by laminating two pieces of glass using clear plastic so when it breaks it forms small pieces.

If you cut a tempered glass you will creat saw blade defect which will cause instant crumbling of glass to small pieces becasus of high energy already stored in the glass by tempering and forming a defect just activated failure and release of this energy.

If you want to cut then anneal the glass if it is floor or window glass go to 500 to 550oC and then cool it slowly to room temperature then you can cut it

I once had to cut a piece of glass three times, and it was still to short. Seriously tempered glass is designed to fracture in to many small pieces, to avoid the type of injuries associated with long sharp edges; it has additional strength to avoid breakage in the first place. Your decision to replace with a glass door of the correct size is not only the best choice, it's your only choice.

I see you ordered the new door already. But I was curious if sanding the glass would have done the trick. We used to sand glass all the time on a water cooled belt sander, but I don't remember ever attempting this on tempered glass. Could be a cost saver

You can sand a little bit from the edges of tempered glass, but 2 cm will probably break it. Anyway, the preparation of the door for the bottom pivot would have to be reworked, and THAT would be a deal killer.

I does seem wasteful, but short of removing the entire door and its frame, reframing the wall (then it won't line up with the other doors in the room), and then reinstalling it all, a new shorter door is the solution.
