Generator Field Circuit Breaker Fault

08/02/2012 2:45 AM

the field circuit breaker contact in the path of discharging resistance got damaged during closing.

what is the possible reason of damaging of this contact during closing.

what are the risk faced by field breaker and generator rotor/ stator windings without this discharging/ arc quenching resistor.

Without being able to see the installation from here, one of the possibilities is that the contact closed onto a short circuit.

The discharge resistor function is to discharge the stored energy in the field windings to earth when the main field CB is open.

Thus, the contact in field discharge resistor circuit shall close after the main FCB opens and shall open before the FCB closes.

It could be that the contact timing is not OK (didn't open before the FCB closed) and that resulted in damage to the contact.
