Google photovoltaic systems india and you'll get a whole bunch of companies which supply these sorts of systems in India.

It may not be economical in the long run. Maintenance overheads are high in India. An UPS system based on storage battery may be a better alternative.

A Solar system will not help you with Power Quality unless you have batteries in the system.

This is due to Grid Interactive systems interacting with the grid power.
By design these units will shutdown if the grid goes down to protect workers on the electrical system.

As per post #2, if you are having issues with blackouts etc get a UPS and size it to your requirements.

A Standalone Solar system would completely remove you from the grid which is another option.

Sapper

Most quality photovoltaic systems include the UPS 'function' (if not the actual device itself) as a matter of course. Larger and more sophisticated installations in the U.S. also provide functions like frequency, phase and voltage synchronisation with The Grid, along with synchronous changeover contactors, for the purpose of selling power back to the utilities. India may or may not encourage this practice.

europium,

For most systems sold , this is not the case as they are purely set up to offset power costs and generate "free" power. They have no storage and therefore no UPS function, they interact with the grid and have anti-islanding functionality which will isolate them if the grid deviates from the local specs.

Local experience says its because the general public does not understand the difference and are being told by the suppliers that batteries are expensive and not worth the cost...

A System incorporating batteries will however perform a UPS function as you say, but the OP will have to ensure that the anti-islanding function is still incorporated.

Regards,
Sapper

To give you a proper suggestion more information is required.

1. The location of power requirement ( area where you live ) to know the availability of required sunlight. For example if you are staying in coastal area where the power failure occur during monsoon and at that time sun light is also not available due to cloudy weather.

2. For your home what is your power requirement and how much load you expect to cover with solar power.

3. How much finance you can afford to install a solar system. Solar panel in India is a costly affair so this information is must

4. There are small stand alone system with battery back up which is the best option for small requirement. You may have read that this year on 15th August some school children of a high school have lighted up small houses of a small village with solar power with a similar system.( Chirang project covered on CNN IBN) see http://www.facebook.com/project.chirag

In NJ ( USA) I have observed solar panels with inverters installed on Electric poles and connected to the LT distribution systems . The technical details of the system is not clear to me but appears to be suitable for a location with almost continuous availability of sunlight and output matches the voltage and frequency of the supply of your location. I have not noticed any such system in India for small utility solar systems but large solar energy harvest in Gujarat ( 600 Mega Watts at Charanka) and Rajasthan( 40 Mega Watts power in Pokran) may be using similar technology.
