3 Phase Fan, Large Industrial Model, As Generator

09/09/2012 1:05 PM

I have some large 3 phase fans that I would like to turn into DIY wind turbines . Have I any chance of getting current from the motor , in ' reverse ' , or should I fix a pulley on them to drive alternators , or is there a better way to do it ? Any advice very much appreciated . Tom , UK

Consider if following could be an option.

Find a buyer for all your large fans, find a suitable wind turbine for your needs and buy it. Live happily there after.

In order to turn a motor into a generator, one needs a magnetic field. Where will this come from, please?

You can run as induction generator excited by grid supply.

It may be possible to run motor as generator, but fans as turbines will be highly inefficient.

We have an air (medium pressure) turbine connected with 3 phase 6.6 kV break generator connected to main supply grid. Ones air fails it acts like a motor, drawing current from grid, but direction of rotation does not change. It is not advisable, so machine trips with an interlock in a shortwhile.
