Reversing Polarity

09/27/2012 6:35 PM

I am trying to figure out how I can reverse the direction of a rotisserie motor so that it can run both directions. Is there some kind of circuit thingy I can wire in or should I just buy two engines. Basically, I want my engine to run forward for like one minute and then backwards for like one minute.

I can't imagine why you would want to do this. Especially once a minute.

If it burns, you can uncook it?

Very funny, really.

I don't think reversing would make any noticeable difference in the chickens, except maybe catching the eye of the customer with a "more advanced, automated rotisserie".

Most inexpensive small rotissserie motors are common Shaded Pole motors, and as such are not designed to run in reverse.

Larger ones, who knows? it will depend on the specific type of motor used. if it is from 1/2 to 3HP, I would consider using a 3 phase motor and a VFD, that way you will not burn up the motor by reversing it that often.

Re: Lyn's FleaBay post:

You would need to be in serious need to waste some money to put a BLDC servo motor on a BBQ rotisserie... but I guess at $140, it's less than my suggestion of a 3 phase motor and a VFD though.

You might be able to get two cheap ones and mount one on either side and weld them together, then use a relay with a timer to switch back and forth....Can you turn the rotisserie by hand easily in reverse? If not then maybe a ratchet assembly...

You can buy cheap DC powered motors made for just this purpose. Reversing their direction is as simple as reversing the power wires going to it. A simple DPDT toggle switch can do what you want or you can use a couple of relays and set it up to do it automatically. Go check your local hardware store, I be you find one there for $20 or close to it.

Use 2 contactors with a change-over switch. In position 1 it will run in one direction and in position 2 it will run in the opposite direction but check whether the shaft mounted can cool in both directions.

I think if you were cooking something with an off-center mass, like a bone-in Prime Rib, you would want to center the meat mass on the spit, but that may end up allowing part of it to extend down too close to the heat. Reversing would allow for more even cooking with less risk of burning parts of it.

Mmmmmm... lunch time...

This would be handy if moving back and forth frequently between the northern and southern hemispheres.

I would be surprised if you are using the motors for cooking.

On one project I saw BBQ motors used on a timer for an automatic feeder.

AC BBQ motors are generally shaded pole, and they don't reverse.

However, I did once have a battery operated BBQ motor. It took two D batteries. If you put the batteries in backwards it quite happily ran in reverse.

Here you go....

Just stick this between your motor and rotisserie.

This ones from a 4x4. You can get 10 forward speeds and 2 reverse speeds

You could even run 2 rotisseries at once if you use the second output on the transfer case.....

The rotisserie motor on my BBQ reverses everytime I shut it off and turn it back on. In that case a simple timing circuit would be all that is required TOF & TON

If your engine can run in revers then you can use A.C driver motor (V to F driver).

or you can use some timers and relaies.

Just rig up a windup spring on it...when it turns off the spring will turn it back...you didn't say how fast you wanted it to go! :-)

Now that's smart mate! Inspirational....

If you don't mind I'd like to add another energy storage arrangement....

Instead of a spring to store the energy (I reckon finding a suitable spring and contriving a mechanical interface for it could be a little time consuming...), you could use a mass on a rope hanging off a winch drum on the rotisserie axle. Windup up, unwind down. A limit switch (or 2) operated by "cams" on the rope could provide the feedback for the motor run/stop control.

Have you considered a small reversing gear?

You probably already have a gearbox, adding one more gear between the two will reverse it, a timer driving a solenoid could switch between the two configurations, disconnecting power briefly during the change over ( parallel microswitches could easily achieve this by connecting power to the motor when the gears are fully engaged in either configuration).

Reversible gear motor, a DPDT latching relay and a 555 timer.
