For a different perspective, consider the answers you might receive if Damocles were asked these questions.

Asked when? When Damocles was standing before Dionysius' throne, or when he was seated on it?

Very good point: I suspect the before, during, and after answers would be very different from each other. I was thinking 'After' when I posted.

It's easy to moan about the boss, but how many workers will actually tell the boss what's going on, how they feel and what the problems are?
When I was boss of a small department of engineers, I had one guy who was a bit of a live wire, but at least had some get up and go. It turned out the other guys didn't get on with him and felt he didn't pull his weight. Of course nobody pointed the finger until he left.
I was under the impression I had a harmonious well motivated team...
Mind, I've never professed to be a good boss, but I thought I was a good motivator... maybe I'm best working on my own.
I've had bosses who took me under their wing and helped me develop, but also some who I'd have walked over hot coals for, only to get stitched up and hung out to dry.
Which is why workers don't tell it as it is....
Yes boss it's all fine

Re: Will You Celebrate National Boss Day?

10/16/2012 12:13 PM

I've had, probably, ten bosses during my career. Of those, two good ones. One very good. As for the rest? They weren't worth the powder to blow them to Hell, and that's a fact.

One - the last one before I became self-employed - came into work drunk, drank on-the-job, would come into my office whilst I was busy, interrupt with idle chat for ten or fifteen minutes, then run off to tell his boss, like some spoilt schoolyard tattler, that I was wasting my time chatting idly (with him, a fact he conveniently omitted in his little tattle-tale).

Another boss hired me as a contractor to develop collision-avoidance software for a semi-automated, billion-dollar offshore oil rig being built at that time in France. My software communicated to a very large database via ODBC calls which he wrote and supplied as a small library. Thing is, he'd convinced his boss that he was an expert C++ programmer. He wasn't, as he turned out, and he resented the fact that I knew the language well and knew his jig was up.

His code didn't work. Almost never worked, in fact. What did he do? Improve his skills? Ask for help? No. Instead, he blamed my code for the problems and whilst I was fixing his, he went around behind my back and badmouthed me and my work to the other employees. By the time I finished the contract, fully 60% of my code was defensive programming. Diagnostics. Exhaustive diagnostics. Anything you wanted to know, you could, written to defend myself from his reptilian tactics. He'd change something in his library, and the system would no longer work. Somehow it was always my part that failed - according to his version of the story - even though nothing was different except the piece he changed.

He had his employer fooled for sixteen years. For sixteen years he had them fooled that he was a C++ expert. Until I arrived, he was their only C++ 'guru'. Then he got a new boss, one who also knew C++.

I had since left and was working at another company writing device drivers. One day I was on my way to lunch. I worked on the 5th floor and was on my down to ground level where there was a small cafe. The lift stopped on the 2nd floor, the doors opened, and there he was. The only company on the 2nd floor was an insurance company. One who now had the benefit of his superb C++ expertise.

He was there a short time, but quit that company and got himself elected mayor of a nearby town. Proof that sh!t floats.

Boss Appreciation Day? For some, very deserving, but you don't need a special day set aside to appreciate a Good Boss because, like a good book, you appreciate them always. No, Boss Appreciation Day is for the rest who are little more than white-collar welfare. A day to remind to you to fake it because, when it comes right down to it, most bosses aren't really very good bosses. Some are downright disasters. My Good Boss' name was Ken. Like the Cullinan Diamond, one-of-a-kind. I appreciated him every day and didn't need a Special Day to remind me of my good fortune.

I'm self employed, so I can honestly say my boss is the biggest jerk and the nicest guy I've ever worked for.

Happy me day.

That's right! And why work for someone else for ten hours a day when you can work for yourself for sixteen! :)

Who the hell decided they should have a day? They didn't ask my opinion.

Perhaps it should be Nepotism/Sycophant Day.

As europium said, plain old appreciation of any co-worker (up/down/sideways on the **** heap) doesn't need a special designated day. If people have to resort to tattty cards and such, it doesn't say much about communication levels in the workplace.

I'd be much more impressed if there was a day in which people get to shadow and work alongside somebody else who does something completely different in the same company. Might have to be phased over a week or so. Perhaps even an entire 24 hour period so they see the outside lifestyle as well. A sort of Undercover Boss melded with Wife Swap. Channel 4 better pay me some money if they use this !

Swingin' Boss Day. :) 'Boss Appreciation Day' just seems a bit contrived to me. Human Centipede Day, kinda sorta.

rofl ! I'm pretty sure the Human Centipede does indeed exist. Ive seen it with various numbers of component parts, all the way from 1 right up to dozens that form a complete circle.

I just had a thought, about the definition of 'boss'....

Currently, I have 3 and a half bosses.

One is in my office - still thinking whether I should celebrate this day with him, and my colleagues will hate me later, thinking that I am some sort of (fill in the blanks). And luckily for me, in my part of the planet, there isn't such a day!

One gave birth to me - she still bosses me up from time to time...

I married one - and she's my real boss, so everyday (and night) it's boss' day!

I help created one - my toddler is showing the signs...guess she has my mum's and my wife's genes....

And the funny thing is I am a very happy family man!

There are bosses... and there are Leaders. I've had one Leader in my career, one that there wasn't anything I wouldn't do if he asked.

Bosses? They are a dime a dozen(gazillion). I'm certainly not going to waste time "celebrating" their existence.

Quite a few years back, the British army ran an advertizing campaign. They have some very cool ones if you look them up. Anyways, in one scene the 'leader' is foccused on helping those who are flagging. In other words, leadership can very much be from helping those at the back. I'm out of time heer to find the link to the advert. Back later.

If you're talking Camaroonian, we don't have a leader. Maybe in title, but not much else.

My first boss after college was a really great guy. I liked him enough that I gave him a bottle of my homemade Cabernet Sauvignon (personally labeled and the whole nine yards). This was back about 1974. In 1996 I looked him up and he said "Bill I have something of yours." and he came out with this bottle of wine. "I thought you might like to have it back." I replied "Bernie... I got a better idea... Got a cork screw??" We opened it up, and it had aged beautifully.

Great story!

I wish Time was as kind to us. Ken, my good friend and former (superbly excellent) boss, passed away a couple of years ago. Even the undertaker was sorry.
