From Where Should I Start for Instrumentation?

10/18/2012 8:20 AM

Dear all Instrumentation specialists,

I did my Electronics Engineering back in 2009. Obviously, Instrumentation was also a part of my Engineering. But my interest during my four years of Engineering was basically in Telecommunication sector. And as a result, my Final Year Project was also related to the same. All in all, I did not pay attention to the Instrumentation part of my Engineering at all.

After my Engineering, I joined a power utility in which I am working as a Safety Engineer in the HSEQ Department of the company and doing MBA simultaneously. Just recently, I have developed interest in the field of Instrumentation. I would like to ask all the respected seniors here as to how and from where I should start to gain practicable knowledge regarding Instrumentation? In short, from where should I start?

Suggest anything that you think should help me in my mission. Please be specific if possible.

Start with a whole bunch of P&ID drawings, a map of the site and some PPE; i.e. go for a walk.

Compile a list of questions and, over time, tick them off using people's answers.

I am constantly puzzled by strangers who, after 5 seconds of cursory background explanation, expect someone here to give them the curricula requirements for their next career. How could we possibly know what you already know and what you are suited to do best.

Talk to an adviser, either at your old school, or at the new one. They will be able to asses you based on the answers you provide to them in response to the numerous questions they will, no doubt, ask you. We do not have that luxury.

Talk to someone in person. Don't ask total strangers to decide your fate.

Well, I was not actually asking for you to decide my future. Rather, I was just asking a name of a very basic, authentic and trusted book / website that could give me the exact feel of the subject, after which I can decide where to go. I just cannot go to the market and buy a book with selection criteria based solely on chance or luck, nor I can just open any website in the World and start searching for my answers in it. The reason that I have asked about this problem on this forum because I've heard there are masters of the field. And who would now better than the master?

A good place to start in instrumentation is isa.org.

By investigating some of their publications and training on instrumentation, P&IDs, etc. you can begin to get an assessment on the state of instrumentation and where you might fit in.

Also, follow the advice already expressed here: Take a walk through your facility, talk with many of the techs and engineers who already support instrumentation and the control processes.

In other words, begin to sample the field and get a flavor of instrumentation. You'll gain greater confidence in the direction to go.

The link of the book provided by Bigg is an excellent reference for instrument.

You can start from here:
