10/19/2012 12:48 PM

. . . .

Using this 12 dots draw 5 lines. No dot should used twice.

A minor editorial subtlety: Your tagline should read, "You caught me, 22!"

Must be more to this puzzle than this, but...

If a line can contain multiple dots...

First line is a horizontal across the top four dots.

Lines 2 through 5 are simply the vertical lines that connect the second and third rows.

That meets the requirements as written in the original post.

Quite. As you are the first to solve, a GA vote! How many correct solutions do you suppose we can come up with?

[edit] As I consider... How do you draw a line using a dot, let alone 12 of them? I would probably select a pencil.

OP forgot to include this statement, "without taking the pencil off the paper", which was part of the original puzzle linked by Mizuti.

That would make it more difficult.

Re: 12 Dots = 5 Lines

Not really.

If we assign number for rows and columns (R & C) with 1,1 being the top left, do the following:

Line 1: R2, C3 to R2, C1.

Line 2: R2, C1 to R1, C1

Line 3: R1, C1 to R1, C4

Line 4: R1, C4 to R3, C4

Line 5: R3, C4 to R3, C1

QED

Even a simple "S" meets the requirement, too.

The requirements state: No dot should used twice.

But! It says nothing about using a dot thrice or not at all!

Victory!

A dot can be crossed by a line once only. Victory, is still far away.

Not stipulated in the challenge.

As do many posts here.

I liked it. It was simple enough for even I to solve.

Wait, is it "I" or "me"?

I know it sounds better as "me", but with the editor here, I want to be correct.

We may need ER for this.

Somewhere the "end where you started" requirement crept in, which invalidates mine.

This thread provides the perfect example of how you will not get a very good answer if you do not state your question well.

Is the puzzle to draw 5 lines or 5 line segments? If lines, do we need to utilize at least two drawn dots to establish line?

I interpreted a line to be between two points. In this puzzle, each puzzle point is to be a point on a line, or a point at the end of a line. It may not do both. All points have at most two connections. I've been accused of making up the rules as I go, especially if there are no rules. 10?

But a line has no start or stop therefore the only lines that never intersect are parrallel lines. A line segment has both a start and stop, that's why I asked about the rules... its more fun to make up as we go though ;-)
