SCR vs Diode Based Rectifiers

11/06/2012 2:02 AM

Dear all,

Request for your inputs -

1. What is the difference between a Thyristor and a Diode based rectifier. Which is better?

2. What is the efficiency of a Thyristor and a Diode based rectifier?

3. Is there any method by which we can increase the loading of a rectifier?

4.How to check the voltage drop between the electrodes or the cathode and the anode?

Your response will be highly appreciated!

Thank you,

Regards,

Rooney

Please bear with me, if I am not able to articulate well.

1. Thyristor is a triggered one-way switch, its duty cycle can be controlled. Diode is a one-way device as long as anode is positive with respect to cathode.

2. Efficiency will depend on circuit design.

3. Yes. Connect more loads to it.

4. Connect a volt meter on suitable range, across both.

Personally, I don't post to threads to garner appreciation.

A1) It's a bit like asking, "Which is better, a car, or a pick-up van?". They do different jobs.

A2-4) See #1↑.

I am interested....Please tell me more about this...how did you call it.... 'pick-up van'?

.

Would it be compatible with pulse and glide operating techniques?

'pick-up van'

I had one of those in the '70s. It's a tricked out van in which you pick up chicks. Mine had a matress in the back.

OHHH! I think I know what type you mean.

It's the 'If this van is a-rockin' don't come a-knockin'....and this van will always be a-rockin' type, right?

the scr (thyrister) is full wave controller rectifier ...it has high efficiency and better then diode rectifier ...which is uncontrolled rectifier ..it has poor efficiency ..

Sorry, nothing like that.

To the OP

How to measure the voltage drop on a diode

What is the input supply to the diode...

If it is AC, then the answer is... u cannot do it with a multimeter.

If it is dc, just measure across the diode when it is forward biased.

If u select diode range on your DMM and connect a diode across it, with red to anode, it will show the forward voltage nearly 0.4 to 0.6 volt
