Generator Fails to Produce Power

11/05/2012 9:19 PM

My Generator 150kva, had been shut down for two months without running it, when I decided to run, it does not produce and power, so it goes, what would have gone wrong and what's the remedy

If it has lost residual magnetism, you may need to "flash the field"; (depending on what kind of genset it is).

Thanks for the contribution.

I believe this might have been the course, lost of residual magnetism, because of the long stay, how can I go about in Flashing the the field coil

If this is what you need, it should be mentioned in the operation manual. DC voltage is applied briefly from a small battery to two terminals. (This applies to certain types of brushless exciter systems.) The long idle period is what suggested this to me.

Have you closed the outgoing power switch and checked the protection (fuses, MCB, etc). How is the gas supply?

Sometimes it's the simplest things.

The remedy is to use the telephone to call the gen-set manufacturer's technical helpline, and ask for technical advice.

If the prime driver is ok [as jack of all trades asked] then the problem it is the excitation. Once I was called in a similar case but the problem was the voltmeter only.

I'm sure your voltmeter is ok!

due to lack of excitation... it may be lack of building residual magnetism..it may be DC supply failure... it may be DIODE or SCR failure...it may be excitor (type- brushless or carbon brush excitation system)...it may be fuse blown... there was many reason to fail to produce power by the generator...

here for brushless excitation system the ...magnetic properties of iron core having some amount of residual magnetism...due to long duration the field magnet(for electromagnet iron core is to be re-excit by using the external dc source for some time ...then the excitation system would work properly...if (another case the dc generator which fed to the main excitation system of alternator having same problem...not building dc supply..due to poor residual magnetism...then take external dc source and connect the main output terminals of the excitor...then it will starts to built dc supply and alternator starts to work properly..

I suppose your generator is brush less type exciter so my answer the main rotor exciter's premagnetic had been lost .in order to active and return the premagnetic inside the main rotor exciter ,disconnect the wires of the stater exciter from the A.V.R board and connect them to 12volt d.c battery and run the generator .if it doesn't generate the power just inverse the polarity of the stater exciter without shut down . check the speed of the generator should be 1500 RPM for(50Hz). if it generates the power shut down and connect the wires to A.V.R if it dosn't check the A.V.R board.

In such situations, where you yourself do not have the knowledge, training or experience to fault find and fix it yourself, calling in an expert is both quicker and cheaper.....

Anything else is just "playing around" and could easily result in injuries and extra damage......

Be sensible.

Aishaamadumamariama.

When you say "it does not produce and power" what does this mean? Do you mean there is no voltage?
