Is this your first encounter with high voltage testing? If so, you might want to enlist someone with more than 3 years 6 months "testing and commissioning" experience to go on site and evaluate the conditions.

We can't see the generator, test apparatus nor any part of your set-up from here.

Have you contacted the maker of the equipment you are using?

What is your area of competence?

First.. get someone who does know what they are doing, second... watch and learn!

you may think I am being harsh and unhelpful.. far from it. In 30 years I've watched cables being tested only a handful of times, but I don't even attempt it because I'm not sure what I'm doing.. never been shown.. but I know its dangerous and in the wrong hands life threatening.

Just because the area you are in is ungrounded, does not mean you can't make your own earth using VERY long earthing rods. So it goes to show you are NOT very familiar with the process, the equipment and the inherent risks.. so step back and get a professional.

Why does the organisation not have a training programme and competence assessment regime in place?

Why does the organisation not have procedures to carry out this sort of thing?

Why is the organisation relying on anonymous responses to a global internet engineering forum to carry out its business?
